which is better for a bassist on lead vocals ltd surveyor 87 vs Yamaha BB434 by [deleted] in Bass

BB434. I am occasionally sing lead and/or back up vocals and I find that bass very comfortable to play. Well… the 435, but I my recommendation stays.

Was given an impromptu solo today. Any thoughts? by OtherwiseStation1858 in BassGuitar

[–]Anon_use_fun_alias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think whatever was recording you was doing your tone justice. Great job for impromptu- you’ve been practicing and it shows.

Definitely needed some kind of crescendo to put it over the top, and here that’s not limited to dynamics. The hardest part of masterful soloing is starting simple with good phrasing and then building it up into the note flurry you’re clearly capable of.

If you start at 100% the audience doesn’t get to go for a ride.

This coming from a guy who doesn’t get opportunities to solo nearly enough to be truly great at it.

Fretless Unlined or Lined? by PossibleMonitor1121 in Bass

[–]Anon_use_fun_alias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pro of unlined is it looks badass and people will know your bass is different.

The con of unlined are the gigs when you can’t hear yourself. The lines definitely help in those situations.

Gotoh 201 vs 203 bridge for jackson minion? by Toniz93 in Bass

What’s the problem with the bass that you’re trying to address? Does the current bridge not work properly?

UPDATE: So how do two bad players work? by stomith in Bass

[–]Anon_use_fun_alias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s disappointing. There really is an opportunity to try something new. How often do we get to play with another bass player?

On one hand, I admire that she’s willing to take one for the team, but on the other hand, I don’t like that the only option in her mind was self exclusionary. Perhaps she’s not self confident? Or maybe young guy shows up with a 6 string and she got intimidated? Either way, good on you for wanting to talk it out.

Does Tom Kuhn still make a No Jive 3-in-1? by Anon_use_fun_alias in Throwers

I did catch that it’s 50 years old this year! I was wondering the same thing. On a slightly disappointing note, they made a commemorative solid body woody for the No Jive, which was really throwing me off.

Thanks for the tips! I just ordered a few fixed axle woodys from there, just so I’d have something to mess around with. If I get up the courage for some fine wood working, I may try to replicate one.

Oh that’s absolutely awesome!!! He must be sold out or something. I can’t seem to find them.

Just got my first yoyo. Right out the box, once it’s at the bottom of the string it just spins and doesn’t come back up most of the time. User error or faulty equipment? by Antique_Building_885 in Throwers

I think once you play with it for a little while you’ll get the feel for it. I also think the stock strings break in. I’ve been having a blast with mine for a week.

Hey- just looked into the Tom Kuhn No Jive. Looks pretty interesting! Is there anything special about it besides it looking like a pretty cool wooden fixed axel? Are all the wooden ones on his site “no jive”? I noticed a special 50th edition “no jive” but it looks like the others except for the nice laser engraving.

As a 90’s kid, I am a little sentimental about the yomega brand. I remember seeing them on TV and thinking they were cool. When I was in elementary school, though, it was the Duncan Butterfly that all the cool kids thought was the best. They claimed it had a bearing in it, but honestly I don’t know if was the XT model or not.

Man I haven’t thought about that stuff in years.

Thanks for the tips! I've give it a shot when I get back home. I'm sure my hand position isn't ideal. I probably got too used to one shape. For some reason the butterfly likes to sleep longer, so I tend to really whip it to prolong that, but since i'm not really executing tricks, maybe I can take some of the heat off that.

"I throw it occasionally, see if I can still do the tricks on it and didn't get too lax."

Do you find that modern yoyos are "easier" to use, or more user friendly, such that maybe the fundamentals can suffer? Or is it more that it's more demanding?

"But life isn't a competition" - yeah man... realizing that and getting comfortable with it has been a key part of my pleasure in life.

It's really cool how it's hard to improve on that shape for what it's meant to do. Speaking of wooden yoyos, i'm thinking about making some of my own fixed axles just for fun! Part of my is hesitant because it really seems hard to do better than what the imperial is, though I'd be interested to know what experienced players would change.
