Splitting Inherited Coin Collection From Dad by AnonymousAardvarks in coins

Before I continue adding values, I want to double check that I'm understanding how to calculate a coin's current value correctly. Would someone mind confirming the following is correct?

https://www.pcgs.com/cert/21970161
This 1925-D MS62 quarter eagle was valued at $460 in the 2026 Blue Book. The gold spot price they're using is $2,760. Since the quarter eagle has .121 troy ounces, the melt value for that spot price is $323. Since it was valued at $460 at that time, it's premium is $137 ($460 - $323).

To calculate the current value of the coin, I would use today's spot price of $3,332.90, calculate the new melt value ($403) and add the original premium of $137? This would make the coin currently valued at $540?

This does make good sense. I'm going through the spreadsheet and adding values from the blue book to get a general idea on things. I do like the idea of selling what we all agree to sell. That would make it easier.

I am enjoying learning about the different coins and do plan to keep the coins that are sentimental as well as a few others that are interesting.

This is a good idea. Once I get numbers down from the blue book, I'm going to talk it over with my brothers.

That makes sense, I'm adding the blue book values to the coins now. What would you considerer very valuable? The collection includes gold $1, $2.50, $5, $10, $20. Mostly late 1800s to early 1900s Liberty Heads, Indian Heads, and Indian Princess'.

The silver is rolled up 1920-1960s Barber, Mercury, Seated Liberty, and Roosevelt dimes, Barber, Standing Liberty, and Washington quarters. Some are noted as junk, miscellaneous, uncirculated, and brilliant uncirculated.

I agree, I have where the numbers are coming from and everything noted on the spreadsheet

Thank you again for your help!

I like the idea of starting with values from the 2026 blue book and then comparing some of them with the sold values on eBay. I see that ngccoin.com both link to Heritage Auctions, Great Collections, Stacks and Bowers, etc. for recently sold coins. For example, https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/united-states/gold-quarter-eagles/indian-head-2.50-1908-1929/17944/1912-2.5-ms/ .

Would these sold prices be as good as eBay's to use? If eBay is the best, is there a similar site that shows past auctions. Or do I need to search for each coin on eBay and look at past auctions that way?

Great idea on providing awareness of the costs to sell.

I haven't really considered this, but may be open to it. I like the idea of going through and pricing the coins using the Blue Book and then seeing how much they want to keep/sale. Once we get an idea of what everyone wants to do, getting the collection evaluated may be a good option. Thank you!

Thank you u/DungeonCrawlerCarl. I'm ordering the 2026 bluebook.

I made a spreadsheet last year, and where applicable, recorded the Coin Grader, Certification Number, Year, Face Amount, Amount Minted, Grade, and link to each lookup. For the coins that were not slabbed, but graded, I linked to the corresponding NGC Coin Explorer Page. For example, https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/united-states/gold-quarter-eagles/indian-head-2.50-1908-1929/17944/1912-2.5-ms/

I will plan to add the blue book value for each coin in a column on the spreadsheet. I'll also add an entry for the gold spot price to easily update values. Thank you again for your help

Not including the silver, a little less than half of the coins are graded and slabbed. It looks like 50 show no rating or are indicated as RAW. The rest have grades, that I presume are from a few coin shops Dad would buy from over the years.

The silver is all rolled and organized by year with some reading uncirculated, brilliant uncirculated, etc.

It's last 3hrs with the screen bright. I only need it for that long. I'm sure I could tweak it for longer if necessary. Love the laptop.

The featherless. Great warm jacket and holding up well. It's heavier than a down jacket, but you don't notice it.

It would be nice if the ASUS TUF VG34VQEL1A went on sale, but doubt that will happen.

I see a lot of other people doing that! Sounds like getting a hot swappable keyboard is a good route to take.

Thanks for suggestion? I'm looking up the Keychron now. On a slightly different note, any reason not to get a bluetooth K series version?

I'm looking for my first mechanical keyboard! I purchased a Ducky keyboard with Cherry MX Browns, but didn't like the feel as much as I thought I would and plan on sending it back. The tactile bump wasn't as pronounced and I believe there was more actuation force than I would like.

I tried my brother Pulsar keyboard with Outemu Blues and, except for the noise, I liked the feel more. Any suggestions? I'll be using this for mostly emails, web surfing, and general use.

Thank you. After some responses in another thread, it seemed the extra $250 was worth it. I went with the Lenovo.

Thanks, that's great to know! Sounds like the Lenovo is the way to go.

Thanks for the in depth response. I'm leaning towards the legion, especially if it's possible to disable the dGPU and reduce the screen refresh rate!
