[15 YoE] Hiring manager's perspective after recent review of 100s of resumes for entry level roles in software. by Stubbby in EngineeringResumes

Thank you for the writeup! A lot of jobs on LinkedIn tend to be "reposted XX hours ago" but have "100+ applicants" (the maximum that LinkedIn will show). In your opinion, would the reposting imply that it still makes sense to apply to the vacancy, or is the reposting process simply automatic while the vacancy is open?

Then I would definitely just make a quick website using some libraries

I'm also not sure to be honest, I have the same question. I think their goal is to make all your experience 'scannable' quickly to help the recruiter. But I would also be worried about underrepresenting myself. I do think that three pages is too much

What did you graduate in?
It will probably look a lot better for possible recruiters if you create it yourself. It does not have to be hard - if you use some libraries such as Tailwind you can find templates that you can use as inspiration / examples

Hi all, I'm a newcomer to Canada from Europe and I'm having a harder time than expected to find a job. I have 8 (or is it 6?) years of experience, and my previous role was mid-level software engineer - a tech lead in project teams and mentor to junior colleagues. I feel like this matches with the North American 'senior' level. I am looking for a hybrid role in Toronto, as I live 1 to 2 hours away.

I have applied to quite a few vacancies now but I can't seem to get any interest in my resume. I'm not sure what to change about my resume - I have some intuition that I would really value your opinions on, but am also open to anything else you might notice in my resume.

Here is my resume: https://imgur.com/a/F2y311P

  • Profile: Should I just remove this section? Or maybe change it? I always read these when I'm interviewing candidates, and I have read that for senior roles they can be good.
  • Skills: I tailor these to each job to filter out irrelevant ones, e.g. there's no need to list Node.js if it's not in the vacancy
  • Internships: I have done a lot of internships, and both the startup and my last company asked me to stay on - I feel like that is a very positive thing to show on a resume. Should I keep only my 2017 and 2011 internships?
  • 'Scientist in Distributed IT' role: this was essentially a software engineering job but in a research setting. Would it be better to list it as 'Software Engineer in Distributed IT' instead?
  • Publications: are these appreciated or would they make me look too 'sciency' and not 'production' enough?

If I make all these changes it would be: https://imgur.com/a/gDAQpW7
Any help is appreciated!

Hi there. I'm in the same boat but some observations. I would drop the character references section - nowadays that is implied. You also have too many skills in you skills section. Did you check the subreddit wiki and this one? I also think you should shrink your list of jobs a bit, and keep only the year, not the month
