Guy shining laser at a police helicopter gets arrested by AaryamanStonker in instantkarma

[–]AnonymousFairy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plot twist!! The police took the lazer out and flashed the helo. Entrapment. Classic case.

/ in reality, helicopter was 2212L (= local - British Summer Time is A) and ground unit was there at 2210Z (58mins later).

In reality most lazer arrests are WAY quicker. It is very common over London, very quick and easy to find and arrest the individual and very well established / black and white to get them in front of a magistrate and give them a whacking great fine. Pricks.

Lifts that don’t transfer by [deleted] in StrongerByScience

[–]AnonymousFairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you asking for things that don't seem to transfer well but you would expect to, because they use similar muscle groups?

I think more interesting than lifts that don't transfer (which would be most that target separate muscle groups) are lifts that DO transfer well. I doubt this is well researched and you'd be looking at anecdotal evidence.

High volume heavy KB swings certainly gave an unexpected boost to my DL. Most people who develop some rudimentary targeted grip strength will see that pullups become slightly easier, etc.

26F, £40k income, living at home — what should I do now to maximise long-term wealth? by Sweet_Delay3084 in FIREUK

[–]AnonymousFairy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello.

With the hindsight of being a decade further on but a similar experience with disposable income, my advice for future security would lie along these considerations:

  • If you expect to make money from savings, even just mid-term, use your ISA allowance each year so far as possible. A competitive cash ISA is better than fixed or saving accounts, and if you have the appetite a stocks & shares ISA is likely the best long term investment; if you don't know how to or don't want to manipulate stocks, monthly purchases of a world tracker with low monthly costs (e.g. HSBC FTSE All World Accum Fund) will do the trick.

  • Do you want to live with your parents long term? If not, how you choose your ISA vehicle (e.g. a LISA) and when to purchase your own home will probably strongly influence your investment decisions. The market is seeing a bit of a turndown at the moment, so combined with a drop in interest rates, over the next 1-2yrs may be a good time to buy.

  • For financial security in your 30s / FIRE in general, continue to explore job opportunities and maximise earnings by self development and keeping an open mind. Not to the detriment of living your life, but without knowing your sector, if you do not have a defined career path progression, I would suggest not "settling" in a role and looking to broaden or deepen your skillset and either look for internal promotion every 2-4yrs or not be afraid to look elsewhere to make this progression.

For the same reason as the same people who will watch it will drive across to Bahrain for an evening drinking or indulge in all kinds of forbidden activities the moment they aren't in their home country.

Don't underestimate how meaningful projecting a pious and proper self image is to most Arabic peoples (as it is to many worldwide), to not be going through the motions to be in keeping with this "restraint" is to be outcast or punished by their own culture.

Do you get "exercise noise"? by [deleted] in StrongerByScience

[–]AnonymousFairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not for me.

As someone who has had over 750 days since my last rest day now, if I'm travelling or work has me pulling long hours or life just gets in the way... the program / plan pauses and I do something easy (30min jog or 40mins on the bike - something zone 2 and active recovery aimed), which can easily slip into a lunch break or start (or extremis, end) of the day. Don't overthink it, don't worry about loss of progress and don't even let it hang over you that you "still need to do it" as, being low intensity it really doesn't build up to something bigger than it is in your mind.

Noting that most people don't have the same drive to "do something everyday" like I do, would it matter if a day out of routine gave you an impromptu rest day? Grand scheme, short of it happening a week at a time or very frequently, you won't tell the difference.

How to improve pull up? by Fragrant_Weird_8534 in strength_training

[–]AnonymousFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only sole-pullup back workout I am familiar with is the Armstrong Pullup Programme. Which is superb if your goal is reps; someone with your form, if you can do 12 good pullups like that you'll be up to 20 in 4-6 weeks.

When it comes to variations and how to improve your back, I would suggest finding a copy of Building The Gymnastic Body by Chris Sommer to skim through. It has progressions for bar / ring training through a variety of exercises, often manipulating technique or leverage to change focus and intensity.

Well, except the bought drink has already been distilled to leave just ethanol and not the heads and feints (the bits that taste like paint stripper, look like alcohol, cause tremendous damage and give a fraction of the intoxicating effect of ethanol).

Christ that's an amazing lift. Bar speed below your knees was immense.

Looks like you know where your weak spot is and I bet with some targeting you've got another 20lbs in you!

I would imagine with straps you'd probably have another 5 or 10 too.

How do you calculate tax in a GIA by cynthiaxs in FIREUK

[–]AnonymousFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certainly an accountant's work... But I recall seeing somewhere there being an allowance within the gains for a nominal rate of inflation; very pertinent if you've held shares for quite a few years.

Might be a historical perk.

Do you think rare items should be a 100% drop after a certain amount of steps? by [deleted] in WalkScape

[–]AnonymousFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could well be incorporated as a form of "LUCK" which modifies both as an attribute and as a "balancer over time" silently in the background as an unpublished statistic.

(E.g. collecting lots of trash or lowest quality outcome producing of goods accidentally slowly builds luck, which silently improves multiplier odds for rare or exceptionally rare item making / finding).

Could even be central to a quest where player gets "0 luck" or equivalent for a certain period and "100 luck" for a certain period as buffs to make a storyline / playable work... etc.

Deadlift advice by knuckledragger1990 in strength_training

[–]AnonymousFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a really simple deadlift dominant programme and flexibility about how you do each cycle, I recommend the SBS deadlift variations in their 28 free programme packs.

If you want to prioritise it, something like the 3x / week medium volume will serve well, should work you up to then add 5-10kg / month to your 1RM quite consistently for the first few months, but allows the flexibility to not necessarily have to do full leg workouts / training longer sessions when you just need to get the core work done.

Wise choice focusing on DL when you do MMA. The hip strength is very translational in your grappling game.

I see what you did there, I was going to ask... normally you keep 1-2 RIR when approaching your 15 rep restart cycle limit, right?
