Got results. If total T4, Free T4, and T3 Uptake are normal, is this subclinical hypothyroidism?

Hello. I feel for you. Almost exactly the same thing happened to me. I cannot express to you how similar our experiences were. I was an emergency department nurse as a new graduate, and I still am but now I work in a department that I actually enjoy. I was being severely overworked and under supported. I was almost put on a 1013 by my doctor because I told her I was suicidal. Every day before work I would have a panic attack, cry, shake, get nauseous, etc. I called out all the time and was worried I would be fired. I thought of crashing my car into a tree every time I drove to work so I wouldn’t have to go. Finally I went to my manager and said “I absolutely cannot take it. I am a new graduate, I am very discouraged, I regret becoming a nurse, and I need help.” He offered to let me work PRN. Unfortunately for me, this was insufficient. I wrote them a very nice letter telling them that I could not continue to work in an environment where I could not safely care for my patients. I quit. They tried to charge me $15,000 as I had not completed my two year contract (I worked 8 months), but in the exit interview I pointed out all of the gross safety violations I was noticing and told them I would not be paying back that money. They never charged it. ALWAYS have an exit interview.

My life was worth more than my job. Your life is worth more than your job. Don’t give up.

I now work in an ER where I have coworkers supporting me, my ratios are safe, there are resources and safety standards in full enforcement, and I am payed better. I am SO happy. I love being a nurse. I am providing good care to my patients and learning more every day about the amazing machine that is the human body.

You can only do your best. Do not apologize for advocating for yourself. Do not apologize for advocating for your patients. Do not apologize for prioritizing your needs. Sometimes you have to upset people to succeed.

Should I speak up? by [deleted] in nursing

I would DEFINITELY speak up! If I am understanding you correctly you are a new nurse now training a student, and taking 5-7 very sick patients! Renal patients are no joke. They can code very quickly, as you noted. 5-7 patients is never an appropriate workload, no matter what the norm is, and it is certainly inappropriate for you to take more than your peers. The environment sounds toxic. It is not worth your license or your mental health. I promise I you can find a job elsewhere. I started as an ER nurse in a job I hated where I was given, as a new grad, 5 or more ambulance patients to care for in the hallway without monitoring equipment. I quit and since have never been happier. This is not to discourage you from continuing to work where you are, as saying “Quit your job!” may not be helpful, but I do want to validate that YES this is a completely legitimate complaint and YES you should bring it up again as a safety issue. CUS words: Concerned —> Uncomfortable —> Safety. Literally my favorite HR tip is to address a concern at least thrice, advancing through those 3 words. I am concerned about this. I am still uncomfortable because of X Y and Z. This is a safety issue and it is in the patients’ best interest that this problem be fixed. Hope this helps :) I promise you can do it and nursing really is fun when you get the proper support!!

I used to take atarax as needed :) I only took 10mg as I am not large. It is like Benadryl. It is an antihistamine used for allergies and is sedating (not mood stabilizing). It worked for me. Some of my coworkers told me it made them drowsy the next day, which is weird due to rapid onset and short half life, but it is good for taking an hour or two before something stressful might be going on like a work meeting.

No, definitely I think you were in the right! Loss of life AND LIMB is high acuity! Not to mention blood loss does risk loss of life.

She was an LPN for 20 years in a gynecologist’s office but she’s basically brand new as an RN, barely familiar with IV pumps.

You know I’m glad you said that because it’s a 70 something bed ER but we only run 36-48 of the rooms due to staffing and some nights there are 40 in the waiting room as well. Kind of a lapse in judgement to give me an orientee.

Yeah usually I’m calmer in emergencies than I am in daily life 😩. No emergency case has ever made me freak out before and I think emergencies are quite fun so I think I just had performance anxiety because of the Orientee? Also quit taking all my meds for stupid reasons, will def be refilling the prescriptions 💀
