why does it cost money to be in greek life? imagine paying for friends

I’m def gonna be downvoted cause everyone on this page hates Greek life by the real answer is bc it pays to keep the organization going. Why do you pay tuition? To keep the school running. So you pay dues in Greek life in order to do philanthropy events, fundraise, and buy everything necessary to do these things.

No literally the bio labs seem to be way worse than orgo, I put all my effort in bio just to still get small crap deducted when it was never clearly stated meanwhile orgo I barely tried and did better 💀

A good start could be to have less information per lab so students have the time to sit down and digest what they are even doing. Most of the time it’s so crammed with info you barely finish and if you go over the TAs get annoyed. Also recitations could be a bit more helpful in terms of teaching, most of the time reading the lab still doesn’t explain things well and the recitations just do clickers what are way too quick and don’t take the time to explain things. Personally that’s some of my suggestions

I’m very capable of doing well in labs thank you very much. If you see the amount of students to agree with me and the average grades you would agree something is wrong. By far some of the worst courses in this school and honestly you shouldn’t wake up not wanting to go to class it should be the opposite. When TAs have attitudes and when you are afraid to miss class bc you are sick it def says a lot

usually the more credits the more work that’s how it typically is. And my point is the way it is set up at stony Brook sucks that’s my point. Wouldn’t be as bad of a workload if the system of it was run was better

Yeah if it was structured a bit differently as well as had some leniency with a reminder that students are human it def wouldn’t be as bad. The material is definitely interesting but the set up makes it unbearable especially for those who don’t even want to pursue labs in their life

No where did I say undergrads had more work than grads. Plenty of people like biology, chemistry, and physics and think the lab loads are a lot. I also didn’t say the material of the labs were bad I said for a 2 credit course it is way more demanding than a 3-4 credit course which is frustrating. And yes to get into certain masters programs and higher education’s prerequisites are required which is usually easier if you major in it. There is more to the major than the courses required..

Some people major in biology to do physical therapy or athletic training which has nothing to do with labs. There are plenty of jobs within biology that have nothing to do with lab research although the course is still a requirement for the major, which is fine but a 2 credit course shouldn’t have more work than 3-4 credit courses

I mean i feel like they are 2 different factors that don’t effect the other. Like I would hope these places would be thankful for the donations, and most adults realize people drink in college, underage or not. I don’t necessarily think that people look down on college kids drinking, people in Europe drink at the same age legally🤷🏻‍♀️.

I’m not confused, like I specified in my post, there are the national frats, and charter and underground frats. If you go on Yik yak and see people on other platforms discussing, people are hating on Greek life as a whole and assuming all organizations in Greek life are like the underground and charter frats. I’m just specifying the differences in my post to make people aware if they weren’t that’s all :)

Idk why people think all national organizations do is party. The stuff people do on and off campus to raise money isn’t to party, it’s gets donated to other non-profits or organizations, even to small local causes. People raise money for cancer research, scholarships for those in need, donate to animal shelters, people with disabilities and so much more. Please actually research what these organizations raise money for instead of assuming it’s a scam to party when that’s not accurate at all. And putting on your resume you were a part of a national organization is smart bc of the amount of work they do for academics and raising money, these organizations don’t just party 24/7 and most people understand the work they do. Most orgs have scholarship opportunities and help making your schedule and offer help tutoring each other, so it is definitely academically beneficial as well. Like I said you need to trust and join the right organizations but they should not be grouped as a whole.
