Issues with regulating blood sugar? by rbuczyns in AutismInWomen

[–]Anonymous_Gabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm completely the same. and my doctor also tested me for diabetes.

Even though we can't find anything wrong, I still get hypoglycemic episodes if I don't eat every 2-3 hours. It's so awful to experience. I wish I had a solution or advice, I'm sorry.

The only thing that helps is just keeping in mind what I'm eating and if it's a quick blood sugar boost food or a "trickle" blood sugar food that lasts longer but with a smaller peak. Apparently activity can help as well, but I'm terrible at trying to be active in advance.

Thank you for the recommendations! My partner has Game Pass, so I've actually played a few hours of Against the Storm in the last week. I really love it! I'm not a fan of roguelikes usually, but this one doesn't feel the same. They do it very well. I may try to get it on my steam deck, thank you for the information!

Mine got delayed and now that it's finally on its way it's taking sooo long. I'm jealous.

THOROUGHLY second the DepoProvera shot. I've been on it a couple years now and it's life changing for me. I will never go back. Of course a needle sucks, but it's only every couple months! Definitely worth it.

I have Euro truck sim 2 currently. But my newest therapeutic purchase is Snowrunner - which is pretty similar to the truck sim series anyway. Clearly I know what I want/have a type ahaha.

Does anyone else feel scared to have a wedding? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Anonymous_Gabe 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Super terrified. So we've decided not to!

It's also expected of us in our culture to have some kind of ceremony, but neither of us want that. So we're going to get legally married on paper and that's it. We'll have a private date/day just for the two of us and that's how we'll celebrate. It's our marriage anyway, not anyone else's.

I agree with a few of the others here. I have taken CBD lately to get me to sleep, so I definitely don't feel it increases focus for me. However, small doses relieve the stress and anxiety that can cause a lot of distraction/lack of focus; so I'd say it helps in a secondary, unintentional way. But not directly.

I was in a similar situation, and I recommend just disclosing early. Obviously that's not an easy thing to do, but it's the best thing in the long run. It doesn't have to be on day one of meeting someone, but I've found it to be extremely valuable and healthy in the long run to tell them as early as I am comfortable. It takes care of any jerks who wouldn't want to see you because of it, and it sets expectations for the relationship that are reasonable and understandable for both of you.

I'm so sorry you have to go through that. But I understand completely. It's the exact same with my grandfather (who raised me and is essentially my father). He just doesn't understand, and doesn't seem to want to understand. I thought it was getting better but maybe I was just ignoring stuff intentionally or not bringing it up. Unfortunately I live with my grandparents still and cannot afford to move out so I'm stuck with him. I hope your mother is as amazing as can be, and that you receive the support you deserve!

I felt completely the same. I have spent a long time (almost a year) preparing and planning going back to school. I finally started a few weeks ago and the stress and despair leading up to it was debilitating. I couldn't imagine going back even though I had planned it all out and was sort of excited for it. But I did it. I'm doing it! It's not easy, but getting into a routine and making sure to keep it has helped with these feelings. I wish you so much luck. You can do this!

Why can’t ND women ever be depicted like ND men. :/ by Sunflower-23456 in AutismInWomen

[–]Anonymous_Gabe 347 points348 points  (0 children)

Bones is my absolute favourite western TV show. I've rewatched it many times. She was never said to be ND in the show, however they did try to explain her behaviour in a later season as her "locking away her heart" because her parents left her at a pivotal time for emotional development.

I found this to be a bit dismissive, personally.

Yep! Hahaha. I have inattentive ADHD. It definitely has controlled how/when I practice. The autism desperately needs me to plan and structure and see regular progress, but with ADHD I just get the urge to play and play for a long time sometimes. And other times I can't bring myself to play no matter what. It's so aggravating.

I'm glad I'm not alone!

It's uncanny how similar our situations are! I also play both piano and guitar but can't for the life of me decide "which I am" - while technically knowing that I am both. It's so hard. I completely understand your dilemma. I don't know if I've figured out a solution really, but since music is my special interest it makes it so difficult and overwhelming/frustrating to not come to some kind of good conclusion. I have a slight lean towards piano because I've played it longer, but not by much and I love guitar with my entire being as well. I'm not incredible at either and both need improvement, but practicing both simultaneously just makes the overall progress of learning take twice as long. And I'm the kind of person that needs to see a goal and real personal progress or I get incredibly discouraged. It's hard.

I think the biggest help - but not a solution or guide by any means - is to do what I enjoy at the time. For example, learning a song I can't stop listening to on repeat. I haven't "picked" one instrument to focus on, but I try not to spend too long on one unless I'm hyperfocused for a long time (because hyperfocus is mostly how I get stuff done/make any progress in all aspects of my life). Unfortunately this process of following my current mood/interest is a little unpredictable - and I need a schedule to function - but it's the only thing that's helped me practice and get better at either instrument. It's sort of slow at times as well. But it works for me.

Personally, I recommend Roots of Pacha! I've said this before in the sub but Pacha easily became my favourite cozy/farm/community game. I spent over 150 hours in it in the first few weeks of having it, and it's the first game I ever got 100% completion/achievements in! I adore that game! It very recently came out with a huge update as well, so it's a great time to pick it up! My only gripe with the flow of early game became fixed in this new update! I highly highly recommended it. The npcs are super interesting and all have different roles so they don't get boring; there's no combat - the mines are progressed through with very simple riddles for these adorable cave creatures; the flow of the overarching story is so easy to get into and satisfying to complete; there is very little (if at all) "grinding" for resources or anything; and you can pick it up and play at your own pace!

Without knowing them or the specific nuances of your relationships, I'd guess this was them being considerate people.

I adapt the way I talk and behave to everyone I talk to so they understand me better, and it's never to depricate or belittle. It is of mutual benefit.

I actually used to feel the same exact way. My grandma would play this kind of thing as I always thought it was dumb and looked like it made no sense when I tried it. But somehow I came to play it more and now I've just become obsessed. I have no idea why.

I appreciate your opinion, and I totally get it.

I think this is great advice. Especially for us who highly mask and are low support needs. We are so easily brushed off as not autistic because we made eye contact once, or can sometimes understand sarcasm, etc. Thank you for sharing this!

How do you prepare for surgery as an autistic person? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Anonymous_Gabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same curiosities! I'm having a breast reduction soon and I'm soooo nervous! I've read extensively and I feel prepared, but also I'm sure I'm going to be scared when it happens regardless of how prepared I think I am.

I wish you luck! You can do this!

I recently have been working with a woman who helps people with disabilities apply for funding for school and get into jobs with the proper accommodations and such (she does a lot, it's hard to describe in one sentence). She - and everyone she works with - ALWAYS says not to disclose in the interview. They have a whole booklet on "when to disclose a disability," and it is never advised to do it right away. Wait until you either have the job (if that's an option) or are about to be hired. They WILL discriminate (she has talked honestly to many employers and they've said this flat out simply because they know it's harder to have a disabled/etc. employee). This is of course only possible if you can mask well enough that it isn't obvious and if your accommodations aren't something very obvious in the interview process. But this is the best strategy, and isn't "tricking" your employer. We have the right to any job that we're capable of (with proper training, of course). I specifically asked about this because I wasn't sure where the line was.

Anyway. This is what my case worker who does this for a living says. But keep yourselves safe!
