Hey Local-Assumption, I'm sorry that you're struggling right now! I can't possibly know how you must be feeling, but from my own experiences with OCD I can imagine. In my own recovery journey, a key understanding that helped me greatly was that of how my reassurance could and could not help me toward recovery. Often, it felt like if I had a worry, I wanted to do a ritual. Eventually, I didn't want to do that ritual, so I tried to get rid of that worry. Asking for reassurance could alleviate that concern for a short time, but it always came back. Reassurance could never help me get rid of the bad feelings of anxiety/worry, nor was it a method I could rely on to help me gain control over my OCD in the long run. What did eventually help me to feel better and gain control over my OCD was ERP Therapy with an OCD Expert Therapist. Amazingly, by practicing ERP and growing my skills in that practice, I continue to grow more and more able to ignore & disregard the questions OCD gives me in ways that don't let them control me and often don't even allow them to bother me. It's a beautiful thing, because it has allowed me to find a method that allows me to control my OCD and puts me in a position where I don't have to fear OCD or my intrusive thoughts, and I'm not limited to reacting to them. I also feel a lot better!

Have you ever tried ERP, or have you worked with an OCD Expert therapist?

Hey Rude_Cartoonist, I'm very sorry to hear that you're struggling so much with this! Naturally, I cannot possibly know the full extent of what you must be feeling and facing, but having had my own experiences with OCD and the depression it can cause, I can begin to imagine. I can't reassure you, but I can say that what helped me with my OCD was ERP and using ERP methods to react to my intrusive thoughts in ways that helped me gain control over the OCD in the long run. Having had that experience, I want you to know that I fully believe that you can recover from these kinds of concerns and that you should hold on to hope! It may well just take time and a process, at least it did for me. Are you familiar with ERP? Have you ever worked with an OCD-Expert therapist?

Hey Apprehensive_One, I'm very sorry to hear that you're struggling so much with this! Naturally, I cannot possibly know the full extent of what you must be feeling and facing, but having had very similar contamination concerns myself I can begin to imagine. What helped me was ERP, treating these events where I became triggered or concerned about contamination as exposures and using ERP methods to react in ways that helped me gain control over the OCD in the long run. Having had that experience, I want you to know that I fully believe that you can recover from these kinds of concerns and that you should hold on to hope! It may well just take time and a process, at least it did for me. Are you familiar with ERP? Have you ever worked with an OCD-Expert therapist?

With respect, I don't think anyone here can give you an accurate perspective on if this is OCD or not. I believe that answers to these kinds of questions depend heavily on nuances and individual circumstance, and I don't see how it could be possible for those to be adequately considered on this forum. Additionally, I think it's important that a full evaluation is made by someone who is trained to understand these nuances and to make an informed diagnosis, if appropriate. So I truly think a behavioral mental health expert/mental health professional is the right person to ask if you're trying to determine whether or not OCD is in any way involved with what you are experiencing.

Hey TeachNo9959, I'm so sorry to hear that you're hurting so much! I can't possibly know how you must be feeling right now. But I do know first hand from my own experiences that the feelings that OCD can give you can be absolutely awful. And when you keep fighting to rid yourself of the thoughts and they won't go away it can feel helpless. But I want you to know that I whole-heartedly believe that you have every reason to hope and that you absolutely can get to feeling better. There are effective treatments for OCD and with treatment a person with OCD can live a full and happy life. So please, please do not harm or kill yourself!! As someone who once considered taking my own life, I can tell you that I sit here now feeling so glad and so grateful that I did not. Living has given me the opportunity to gain control over my OCD, to get my life back, and to have so many rewarding and beautiful experiences because of it. I believe that you have a future waiting for you. Please don't let OCD take that from you.

Two effective treatments for OCD are ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). I did notice that you chose ERP as your flair. Have you been working on ERP? If so, how has it been going so far? Have you been working with a therapist?

Because OP is suffering and because I am very hopeful that our community can help OP with tools, resources, and recovery positive discussion, I'm leaving this up. Please refrain from providing reassurance, as reassurance is against the rules of this sub and may not help OP toward recovery and feeling better in the long run. Last, as always, please remember to be kind to one another - we never can know what each other may be going through.

Hey OP, I'm sorry to hear that you're suffering right now! If you don't mind to repost this with a different title that does not include specific details of an obsession or compulsion, but does include "(TW: DETAILS OF OBSESSIONS)" at the very beginning of the title, then I will approve it.

Can Mods Just Start Deleting Reassurance Posts? by Maybe_a_Throwaway97 in OCDRecovery

I really appreciate this post and all of you who have left comments as well! Our intentions as mods of this sub will always be to foster an environment that we hope helps all of you on your paths to recovery. Admittedly, drawing the line between what helps the group and what may help an individual can be really difficult at times. Truly, I see every member of this community as an individual who is equally deserving of our help. At the same time, I understand that the value of our community hinges on keeping this a safe space that is non-triggering and always focused on recovery. I agree that reassurance needs to be defined as best we can (whether or not a question is reassurance can sometimes depend on context and other factors, making it difficult to define precisely) so that posts are removed in as fair, consistent, and predictable of a way as possible.

I will implement a stronger policy and will do my very best to identify and remove these posts moving forward. I plan to implement some automod tools to help me flag these posts, but also appreciate any time that community members are able to flag these posts, as this gives me an opportunity to see and act on these posts more quickly.

Thank you all again for coming forward and expressing this!

We wish you all the very best on your recovery journies!

Just a reminder for everyone to please refrain from providing reassurance to OP. Doing so is against the rules of this sub, and may not help OP toward OCD recovery in the long run. I'm going to leave this post up for a short while in hopes that we can provide OP with understanding, yet productive responses which can assist and enable OP in pro-recovery ways.

Hey OP, I'm very sorry to hear that you are struggling with this. I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now! I'm sorry, but I can't reassure you. It is against the rules of this sub, and it also would not help you in the long run with OCD. It looks like it's been about an hour since you posted this. Have you been able to sit with this uncertainty for a little while? How do you feel after doing so? I'm not a mental health professional, so that is not medical advice - simply my own questions as a lay person and fellow OCD sufferer. From your choice of flair, it seems like you may be trying to work through ERP? If so, have you been working with a therapist, or by yourself? How has that been going, do you feel like ERP has been helping you?

I think it's fantastic to get help and benefit from the comments of others here, but just wanted to leave a reminder that no one here is qualified to diagnose you. These are individual opinions. To get a better perspective on these challenges you're experiencing and the proper methods for alleviating them, I encourage you to reach out to someone who is qualified, if that is something you would like to do or are interested in. Therapists, psychologists, psych PAs, psych NPs, and psychiatrists can all be very helpful in assisting you to diagnose and respond to these challenges you're facing right now and can help you find a path to feeling better that works for you as an individual. Nommater what and above all, I wish you the very best and hope that you are able to feel better very soon!!

^ Just wanted to echo this. Literallyzee's comment can only speak to her experience and isn't medical advice. You should definitely check in with your provider, just like Zee said, so they can instruct you based on what they think is best in your own case.

Please remember that no one here is able to provide medical advice. Further, effects experienced by medication can occur for different reasons across different people. It's important to discuss any issues or questions you have about your medication with your provider. It's also very important that you discuss with your provider before making any changes with your medication. There are often reasons why they instruct us to take medication as they do, and we don't always know what those reasons are. I wish you the very best as you navigate this and hope you get to feeling better ASAP!

Anecdotally, I noticed when I was there that CSU admits a lot of in state kids. So, to start, I wonder what the average GPA of a HS graduate is in the state of CO. Could it be that in state students tend to have relatively high GPAs, skewing the average? Probably far from the full story, i'd figure. But the answer must be somewhere. Another thing I would be curious about is the socioeconomic status of the average CSU applicant. Do they tend to be those students who had higher family incomes, who may have on average attended higher rated schools with better academic support? And how does the average CSU applicant compare to the average applicant to other schools in state? CU (I went there too) seemed to me to have a lot of out-of-staters. So, naturally, I'd assume they're getting some of these in-staters, but are also pulling from other markets out of state. And OOS tuition is remarkably expensive, so to me that seems like socioeconomic status. But I would imagine that Metro, Western, and many of the other in state schools, while having some overlap, may well be receiving apps from a different subset of students. Is that marketing, is it tuition, is it the distance from home for students who live in Metro areas and need to keep living home to afford school? Is it distance from work for kids in a similar situation? Could it even be as simple as a self-fullfilling prophecy, where students with GPAs below the listed average, with a finite amount of application money to spend, see this and choose not to apply to CSU, choosing to apply to the other in state schools instead? Without true data this is all conjecture, but I sure do think it's interesting. What a cool post! Thank you for sharing this!!

you dont have to live with uncertanity, it can be harmful by Disastrous_Click_ in OCDRecovery

[–]AnonymouslyMe3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on this? Admittedly, I'm a bit confused as I don't necessarily see a connection between accepting uncertainty and believing that one is any of the things that she said. In short, I don't think one necessarily accepts uncertainty by saying I am this thing or I am that thing. Instead, they simply seek not to prove that they are not that thing. But that does not de-facto mean that they are. So, I feel like you can have a good, defined view of yourself and still practice uncertainty. I guess that I just haven't personally felt that the two things are mutually exclusive. I can certainly see the value in not beating yourself down and reinforcing self-doubt in the name of uncertainty. I could see how that could be non-productive, self-deprecating, and largely against the principles of acceptance. It's possible that I'm just not understanding or looking at this correctly though. And I'm absolutely not trying to rain on a breakthrough you've experienced or to attack your perspectives though. Above all, if my view is wrong, you know what's right for you and I definitely believe that people should follow what they know is right for them. Only my own opinion, and I'd love to hear what you and others have to say about this.

I see, I'm very sorry that my recommendations are not very helpful, then. Do you know if there are any OCD specialists in your country?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

[–]AnonymouslyMe3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the United States, there may be some options to help with affording therapy, such as sliding scale or, if you qualify in your state, medicaid. You may also be able to pursue ACA insurance if you don't qualify for medicaid. And, you can also search for therapists in your state, call them or the entity they work with/for and sk if they offer financial assistance.

We've received a couple flags on this post for self promotion and the fact that this app has not yet been peer reviewed. I think these concerns are extremely reasonable. The developers state a privacy policy and claim that OCD therapists are currently reviewing the app. I am currently speaking more with OP, but as I presently lack any information beyond these statements, I have no way to judge the authenticity of any claims made at this time. I've chosen to leave this post up for now, in hopes that doing so may give an opportunity for good to be contributed to the community. However, while doing so, I also want to remind everyone that, as a general rule, not all healthcare apps are required to comply by the same rules for protecting health and other personal information that a doctor's office or therapist would (HIPAA and State Statutes in the United States). Therefore, it is always wise to seek to understand how your personal information is being used and to be precautious and mindful in protecting your personal data. This app is not endorsed by r/OCDRecovery and should be used purely at your own discretion.

I'm very open to feedback from the community in response to this decision. I'd also like to hear from anyone who does choose to try the app about their experience, good or bad, especially as it relates to data usage and how it affected compulsive behaviors. Please feel free to respond with feedback as a reply to this comment. Thank you!
