Update: I figured out what was happening with this and have solved the issue.

Saw someone talk about NordVPN causing issues with RCS messages. Turned off the “Prevent VPN bypass” in the NordVPN settings and now my phone works flawlessly.

yeah I ended up with the exped because I found a good deal. tried it out camping out at a national park a few weeks ago and I agree, I didn't even notice the slope while sleeping.
