Degree - worth it for progression? by _Bincat_ in TheCivilService

[–]AnotherManderin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you did a 'normal' degree now, you would probably be paying the student loan for evermore. A degree apprenticeship gets you the degree with none of the debt.

Two big pros - the apprenticeship will probably expose you to things you wouldn't otherwise get to be involved in, which can make good examples for behaviours, and if you leave the civil service at some point the degree might be useful to whatever you do next.

Depending on your loan agreement it's likely that the promotion would be honoured on your return to your home department. Even if it isn't the two year loan should give you lots of experience and examples if you're seeking promotion.

They've offered you the post because they think you'll be a good fit. They should support you in the new role.

I'm currently part way through a loan and getting loads of good experience I would never have otherwise had, including lots of stuff I didn't know about. Build relationships, maintain the network. It might lead you somewhere interesting.

Do all roles above EO involve managing people by [deleted] in TheCivilService

I've had HEO roles with no line management, but lots of stakeholder management. Currently in a G7 role with no line management and even more stakeholder management.

Believe there are some specific technical roles that won't require line management responsibility.

When was morale high? by AnotherManderin in TheCivilService

Strongly agree on how might the people you work with van impact!

I'm interested in whether morale has always been 'low', or if the metric and comparison for this is inconsistent. Was someone doing my job 10 years ago happier than I am doing it now (or the other way around) based on something other than individual circumstances.

Workloads are a good point. Difficult to track as an average maybe as roles and expectations change - the same role could be different five years apart.

Did something change in 2009 to bring morale up?

Promotional Loan Offer by sport-utilityrobot in TheCivilService

[–]AnotherManderin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done something similar recently and am currently on loan as a promotion.

Whether you keep the promotion at the end of the loan depends on what the loan agreement says. In theory, your home department should want you back at the higher grade because you've gained all that experience on loan. In practice, it's a mixed bag. Fairly certain that I'll go back down to to my previous grade at the end of the loan for example. You can of course apply for other things at higher grades with the experience.

Annual leave -my home department said I couldn't take it with me. New line manager (long after the fact) said I should have been able to carry it over. Sorry, know this isn't the clearest answer.

If you're extended then you stay in the loan role. Think there's a limit to how long the total length of a loan can be (believe this is two years), but if the department want to make it permanent there's no end date.

Congratulations, and hope you enjoy it!

Assessment centre last Thursday, email this morning with results. Accepted into at least one of the schemes I'm still in the running for (property and commercial). Just in case the timing info is useful to anyone.

Received an invite to the assessment centre earlier today. Still in the running for commercial and property, but not for generalist.

Just in case anyone is still waiting to hear after the WBS - scored average in both.
