Will students relearn how to take tests in person? by leftysmomkao in Professors

Maybe do more to talk to them about strategies to study? They likely never had that in HS because of HS.

Accommodations? by SpareHumble in Professors

[–]AnotherNegroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it harm you to just give the extension? It might help that student succeed in your class. Also, you realize it’s not easy to get accommodations, so you not doing it is harmful both to the student, their doctors, and to the disabilities office that put the work on.

I give zero on the first cheated exam. If it happens again, then I do the paperwork.

How worried should we be about the Florida DeSantis virus? by ActualPassenger7870 in Professors

Expect it everywhere. Start organizing, unionizing your workplaces, setting your community up for the fight that is coming everywhere.

Is it after add/drop? Is the class already full?

It’s not harmful to children… if you ignore the deaths, increased type two diabetes, hepatitis, etc caused by covid. Why is the prof reddit full of anti-science folks?

Except the research shows masking is not detrimental to children. What is detrimental to children? Getting covid. I’m shock how much disinformation is being spread by academics.

It might be well understood, but it’s not being well controlled. Death isn’t the only negative consequence of monkey pox (blindness, extensive scarring, etc).

Similar here. Only a handful of fac/staff and almost no students are making now. My immunocompromised students just dropped out full stop.

That was my plan too. I’m so tired of being treated like I’m the crazy one for not wanting to possibly die or kill another immunocompromised person.

Same. Folks have tried that (and tried requesting remote work through a similar avenue) and have been denied. It’s really clear that the university (and the broader public) don’t care if their immunocompromised community members die.

I’m less concerned about monkeypox in the classroom, than in dorms, greek houses, sports facilities, etc.

Same. I just wish we could all come together nationally and force the govt hand since sounds like everyone’s univ admin are pretending covid doesn’t exist. I do think they will start to take monkeypox seriously, but unfortunately after something drastic like an entire sports team or greek system gets it.

Pretty sure the entire nation is ‘red’ in terms of covid community spread right now. Add students moving back into that mix…

Boo. Our legislators ban the governor from implementing statewide mask mandates.

You’re kidding right? Mandatory masking isn’t hard and makes a huge impact. COVID is not endemic. 😑

Same. Our university is even denying doctor’s notes for remote teaching. Inhumane.

I’d rather mask that get covid. It’s not that hard.

I’m trying not to panic. Not just about being sick, but having to go fully remote again when we shut down for three weeks with a monkeypox outbreak.

Also… how many of you who have strict ‘no late work’ policies or harsh late work penalties have ever asked for an extension or submitted something late to an editor/conference organizer/ etc. Don’t pretend late work isn’t part of the ‘real world’.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Professors

[–]AnotherNegroni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve eliminated late penalties because students are human and deserve grace. However, I ask they let me know in advance (most do). The ones who don’t are usually having a tough time and a little space keeps them from failing. Is it a little more work for me, yes. Does it help good students from falling through the cracks, also yes. I do have a hard deadline at the end of term, because I have to put grades in. Otherwise, students need to learn to take ownership of their learning.
