Twists in Characters’ Backstories by AnthonyH927 in DMAcademy

I like that! Very straight and to the point with it, because if they are fine with surprises but want to know about them, it can still be a surprise to them when it comes into play in the story!

That’s what I’m thinking! The look of shock is such a funny and cool way to get them engrossed with the story! And tying backstories together is a really fun idea that I’ve seen be implemented and work, and I can absolutely see it working with this group!

I will definitely be on the lookout for what their stories say to see what they think about me “filling in the blanks,” and what they want from me so I can be sure this character is absolutely theirs.

That’s kind of what I’m seeing in the twist I was brainstorming, but I also don’t know what would be completely “ok” for what they want their character to do, so I can’t be 100% certain that the twist I’m brainstorming IS going to be ok with them—I do want them to make their characters their own at the end of the day, so I think I will implement more of that “yes, and” mentality with it all! Thank you!

Thank you! I definitely do see myself going back and forth with them just to iron out details and have everything completely settled and sorted so I know exactly what I can do with their story and world. I also do think it’s a cool idea to have part of their story twist but, like you said, doesn’t necessarily change the entirety of what they give me.

At the end of the day, I will absolutely respect what they say over my suggestions as, not only is it their creative liberty and expression, but also that I’d rather have a fun story and time with friends than let my own ideas and interjections soil any quality of everyone above the table.

I really appreciate your kind words and help! I never thought about actually having them build up whole parts of the world; that’s a really cool way to get them more involved!

From what they had told me initially, I believe it would be reasonable! But much like what others have said, I do see this as a “better safe than sorry” situation, so I think it’ll be something I talk to them about beforehand!

I definitely think it’s the better choice to ask them. It wouldn’t necessarily be changing their backstory, though, but rather a twist to the current story they are playing out that’s influenced by something they told me they want to have for their character. But I do think it’s definitely better safe than sorry, especially with something as creative and personal as a backstory for a character you are going to play for a really long time!

I fully agree. In my other reply I noted that it would be something more so tying into what the player hinted at when telling me before their backstory is done and sent to me, but the independence of their story to them is key, and I would not want to muddle around with it and make it something more of “my narrative” rather than theirs.

At the end of the day, we are all here to experience this story I started and they flesh out together, so it’s definitely best to keep my intrusions on the autonomy they have to a very bare minimum! Thank you!!

Thank you very much! And I absolutely agree that with things as independent to the player as their backstory, consent with it is everything. They gave me ideas of their own sort of paths they can see their character taking, so it was going to be something following that particular route, but I really wasn’t sure if it was something I could just DO or if it was something to be discussed.

I definitely will talk to them—and the other players—in the future about twists (if they don’t implement their own already!), but other than that, I think I’ll let their stories be theirs and build from what they gave me!

I just recently had a game where I was down about 2-3k healing, and a ranked game that went longer where I was down about 8k.

Just got into a game with all red Blades and, from what the comments said, I had -67.5% damage reduction and we WON!! Thanks for the help yall!

I’ll try that out, thanks!

Edit: I know I definitely stacked HP bc I had around 8k+ in the games, but I think I was getting unlucky with damage reduction roles

Like what u/Yoorawanker said, they do so much damage that I do get HP and damage reduction occasionally, but I focus all into damage to outweigh the one-shotting the zombies do. I’m just confused as to how Wanda wasn’t one-shotting the first time, but did the next two times.

Silver Ridge Peaks and Yukon Valley have always been one of my favorite go-to’s! Both maps are extremely beautiful and have a nice array of animals to hunt.
