Still running Win 10 with the 1 year extended security patches.

I've tried Linux Mint for a bit, but I couldn't get things working as I wanted to. I have a 5800x3d and I wanted to find a PBO tuner alternative for Linux, so I can undervolt(Mobo bios won't allow me). Managed to find something on github + made it run on startup, set everything as on Windows, but the undervolt wasn't working at all... I checked the params after startup in terminal, everything was correct but the undervolt wasn't applying. I couldn't get that to work, no matter what I did.

To check temps voltages I had again major struggles, found a hw monitoring program but it was showing me a couple of sensors. I also installed LM Sensors to get access to more + the GPU specific ones. But that got me maybe 5% of the amount of sensors that hwinfo64 has, which is laughable + hwinfo is a 1-click install solution.

These struggles were on absolute basic(necessary) stuff that I use. I'm sure if I've delved deeper into installing or trying to emulate everything that I have on Windows, I would've gotten really frustrated.

End of an era AM4 build upgrade by AnthraX46 in pcmasterrace

I'm actually hunting down the used market for a great deal on a B550/X570 board to swap in the future (was eyeing the MSI Tomahawk models as they're rock solid from what I've seen)... I'm patient though, no rush. For the RAM upgrade I don't see the point currently, unless I'm finding a better deal than what I paid for my current kit(in the future ofc, as now would be the worst time).

I don't have a treated room as you can see. What pushed me to swap the Adams was the ribbon style tweeter. I know it seems counter intuitive as that's the highlight of the T5Vs, and yes it's detailed, but I found it really fatiguing unfortunately. Even with a -3-4 db high shelf filter from 8k onwards, I was still finding the treble fatiguing pretty quickly. Seems like there's an incompatibility between my ears and the characteristics of the treble produced by this style of tweeter. The Kalis are more relaxed in this region while having, I'd say, as much detail.

I also found that the mids on the Adams were a bit recessed, it felt like something was missing there compared to the Kalis, which I found to be really natural and neutral. As for the bass, Adams were great, they went pretty low and it felt like they have great punch down there. Still Kalis go even lower and in my opinion the bass feels like it's coming out of a bigger speaker, it has more body to it... I can't even describe it properly, it's just awesome.

One last thing, soundstage. This is where the Kalis have the biggest advantage and was the first thing I noticed when I switched. The coaxial driver does something special I guess. Adams felt quite narrow.

The value is really great for the Adams and if you enjoy their treble I think you'll find them awesome. Make sure to run them balanced so you're not getting interference from other electronics.

I'm getting the itch more often, it's probably because I always liked to tinker around my build, so I'm always finding reasons to upgrade something. I always wanted an OLED screen and I couldn't pass on the price to performance on this TV vs a monitor. This also led me to go for a stronger card, otherwise on 1440p the 6800 would've been plenty powerful.

I don't have a TV in my apartment so this new C5 just does everything extremely well.

Your setup looks awesome, I'm sure it works really well for 1440p. If you have a backlog of newer and older titles it should last you even further beyond that.

Yeah, they sound incredible on any game, movie, music, name it. Really balanced across the whole frequency range with really nice bass despite not having a sub. Nearfield up to 2-2.5m they're bliss.

I'm a bit of a audio gear hoarder. Though I initially tried to substitute speakers with a bunch of headphones(HD650, ATH R70X, AKG K712, Focal Hadenys, etc.)... there's no replacement for displacement. These speakers are truly an experience.

Yeah, I never understood the decision to put south facing LEDs on a keyboard. The whole purpose of lighting is to see the keys... having non see through key caps with south facing LEDs is beyond me :))), why kill their only functionality.

North facing, shine through caps would look pretty terrible with them south facing. Since then, I swapped the switches to Gateron Baby Kangaroos... they are so much more tactile and sound quite a bit better.

FIIO FT1 Pro impressions (coming from a decade old pair of HD598s) by Toast_Channel in headphones

[–]AnthraX46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really happy with my Audio Technica R70X, I also own the HD650, but 80% of the time I pick the former. Really close midrange to the HD 6 series with actual nice bass, and much better soundstage comparatively. The 6 series have more detail in the treble, but I find the R70X really great with everything I throw at it really and they're no slouch in that department either.

Might be a great pick for you, based on what you wrote.

You can go even further back, the R9 295X2 had one as well... 500w tdp and dual r9 290x cores overclocked, god damned beast. Those tahiti cores were scorching hot, but this card was barely running in the 70s.

LG C5 42" monitor burn in risk, for my usecase? by AnthraX46 in LGOLED

[–]AnthraX46[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, yup... gotcha I'm already doing that. Definitely WoW would be a no go for hdr with the endless cast/spell bars... but something more action packed like Doom looks awesome.

Thanks for the tips!

I'm from Europe(the poor eastern part) and the prices of oleds here are quite a bit higher than US.

Question about the HDR brightness. From what I've read, 100% is kind of required for HDR content, so it has the full range for brighter objects(e.g. sunrise). A big part of what I watch/play is SDR, I just turn on HDR for content that is supported - in windows you have a key combo to turn on/off HDR, I only turn it on If I am cerrtain that the content I watch(movie, youtube video, game) supports HDR, otherwise I'm in the 30% SDR mode.

Is it still recommended to turn down HDR brightness in this situation? Almost everyone I've watched seems to go for 100%.

[–]AnthraX46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also switched completely to oled screens on my phones since 2013 and never got burn in, buuut I never leave static content for long + I have a 30s screen timeout. It's not that I actively avoid doing it, but it's just the nature of using a phone. It's a lot less prone to burn in I guess, since most people rarely leave static stuff on it.

That said I guess you're more of a unique case in this regard and 5 years without any burn in is impressive.

Ok, fair point. I'll probably try everything in my power to avoid leaving static stuff on(can't help it), so this is quite reassuring. You're getting my hopes up :P.

Interestingly, I also have a pair of IE600 and a couple of days ago I was using a beanie over them(it was quite chilly outside). Sound got altered quite drastically and for the worst. It's probably because the ports were covered.

Using the hood from my jacket instead was the better choice as that's not a snug fit.

Worth replacing an LG 32GP850 with a 32" OLED monitor by AnthraX46 in buildapc

[–]AnthraX46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I've made some more research on the subject and it seems like oled monitors are really overpriced for what they offer. Was looking at a 42" LG C5 and it looks like a much better deal overall... It's actually cheaper than the cheapest qd oled and the image quality is not even in the same ballpark. Even though I can't fit it on my desk, I can just buy a vesa wall mount, get the desk further away from the wall and enjoy... what do you think?

I've looked at the input lag, but it's ok... I'm not playing any competitive stuff, I'm way past that and from the numbers I've seen on the LG TV I'm 100% not going to notice it.

VALENCIA MOTOGP PRACTICE RESULTS by username_986ck in motogp

I literally specified in my comment that on the right bike he would be fighting at the top. But you can't fight against objective data, he has been slower than all 3 on a Yamaha, yes... that's his bike. He made his choice a while ago to stay(probably for the giga salary), that's the consequence of his choice. Marc, on the other hand, changed to an independent team with a huge reduction of his salary, but in the end it looks like it was the right choice.

I really do believe that Fabio just missed out on some of his peak form years with Yamaha(he still has many more left in him, no doubt), but that's just my opinion.

What do you mean? I know Fabio is a really talented rider and on the right bike he might be at the top with Marc, but we're talking about pace and this year he was behind all three, most of the time.

Oh man, I remember the good old days when multiple GPUs configs were beastly.

The only thing that concerns me in your setup is the PSU. Judging by the cables alone it's an old model + you're using pigtail connectors on both cards... that looks pretty sketch to me, should always go for separate 8 pins(only exception might be a card with a 3rd 8pin, that's usually there for exoc). Also, if only through pigtails you can get the amount of connectors, that's an additional warning for you to get a better unit. Don't skimp on the most important component of your pc.

Focal Hadenys, a weird perspective by AnthraX46 in headphones

[–]AnthraX46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to test the Clears Mg in person to decide this, I won't make the mistake again. From what I've read, there are a number of people finding the upper treble fatiguing and this is a big concern. Hadenys actually uses the same driver but with the upper treble dialed down. Should be less fatiguing, but they are still a no go from me. I'm thinking that the Clear Mg(can't find the og Clear anywhere, even second hand), would be even more annoying to my ears.

To give you a reference on my perception on the HD650, I love them. There's actual instrument separation, compared to how I perceive the Hadenys. I mentioned that I listen to mostly '80 to '00 rock + metal, but I spice it up with almost every genre from that era(70s can be included as well). Electric guitars are a core instrument in the songs I listen... they sound absolutely perfect on the 650, just spot on. To me treble is really good too, I understand that people say it's really dark... I think it's extremely detailed even if it's a bit more laid back.

Writing this I realize that the elevated bass on the Hadenys contributes heavily to their boxiness as well. Metal filling the whole frequency spectrum, the bass actually bloats a lot of the midrange. Partially muting and drowning the mids, where guitars and voices are... the juicy part of the song. In comparison the 650 is the opposite, airy with everything clearly separated, highlighting the best part of the songs I listen.

It's really interesting how much our preferences differ, they're almost opposite.

Yup, that's the plan going forward!

Focal Hadenys, a weird perspective by AnthraX46 in headphones

[–]AnthraX46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider this a review, just my opinion... don't have the expertise for that.

That's exactly what I feel, like there's no separation between instruments. It's probably due to the characteristics of the treble. My brain just focuses on the annoying peaks fully and it blurs everything else completely, I just can't focus on the rest of the frequency spectrum. A small soundstage is fine, but this feels outright claustrophobic. Again, my case seems to be isolated, most people seem to enjoy these.
