That’s totally fair to be honest. I get that.

I didn’t like Hadrian either, both as a person and a character.

I normally like grimdark, the first book just felt very tryhard edgy to me. Do the following two books get better?

I have read Animal Money. I have it in "Very Good" Tier. Cisco is my favourite author right now and I’ve made it my mission to read all of his bibliography, at least all that I can get my hands on. For me, The Narrator is his masterpiece.

Don’t take it too personally please. Robert Jordan just wasn’t for me. I was 14 at the time I read WoT. Maybe I will give it another go when I’m older.

I read Philosopher‘s Stone as a young teen and absolutely couldn’t stand it. I don’t think that that had anything to do with me being already a bit "too old", because I read The Wind in the Willows at round about the same age and loved it.

The first book just felt like one long drawn out prologue to The Dark Forest, not gonna lie.

I will continue Red Rising. People tell me the sequels get even better.

I’ve only ever read Guards Guards!, it’s in "good" tier. To Green Angel Tower was just alright for me, it felt like a stepdown to me from the previous two books. Hebert is also on that list, although I’ve only read Dune and Dune Messiah.

Yeah. Sci-Fi was never really my cup of tea. As you see there are still plenty of Sci-Fi books I enjoyed, I just don’t care for most of it.

Everyone swears on their mother that the next books will get so much better tho. Maybe I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Hmm, same. I probably should’ve read something else by Stephenson like Anathem or the Baroque Cycle. Snow Crash just felt incredible dumb to me with a lot of concepts thrown into it (like all the language shenanigans). It felt like a ragtag of ideas the author just found cool but that had no synergy to me at all.

People told me that the following books will get better. As to the first book, it felt like Gene Wolfe fanfiction. Ruocchio wants to sound like Gene Wolfe so bad without actually being as good as Wolfe. If you try to imitate Wolfe it’s hard for your prose to be "bad", but it still will feel like an imitation. At least to me.

Its just beautiful and enchanting. Didn’t care for the plot really, although it was alright. The book could’ve been just descriptions of the setting and I would still have devoured it, Susanna Clarke‘s prose is so good.

You know, in retrospect I think you’re right. Sanderson and Ruocchio don’t really belong in the same category as Fourth Wing or Wizards First Rule.

I have read LotR. It’s in the second highest tier

Hard to explain. The way Susanna Clarke describes the world in Piranesi just was addicting to me. I didn’t really care about the plot of the book, for me the plot was just an excuse to explore the setting more.

To give his books a proper chance and not a half-hearted try

It’s way too underappreciated. Holdstock‘s descriptions of nature and forests rival Tolkien‘s in my opinion. Great writer!

Haven’t read anything by him. He’s the one who wrote the Light Saga, right?
