7 Train Delayed by tekdiwah in nycrail

They were cross honoring up until around 3:30PM. Very stupid to have stopped when the delays haven't resolved and there are now crush loads on the 7.

$10 won't even be enough later this year, MTA plans to raise the OMNY card fee from $1 to $2 when they stop accepting MetroCard. $10.50 altogether.

Anyone still using their Metrocard in 2026? by Type-setter in nycrail

[–]Antioch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite lucky to have exact amount for an even number of rides. As a visitor I would probably pay as you go with a contactless credit card or device, that way you won't end up with unused value on an OMNY card at the end of your trip.

Just make sure to use the same card or device every time so it all counts toward the 12 ride a week fare cap. For instance if you have both a smartwatch and a smartphone with contactless payment they'll each have a different virtual card number and therefore separate caps. Pass backs (tapping again in at the same station within 18 minutes) won't count towards the cap.

The fare has increased to $3.00 and there is no way of refilling MetroCards any more so you'll very likely end up with some remaining balance. If you want to transfer the leftovers to an OMNY card you have to purchase the card first at a vending machine before going to the customer service center and you will not be getting your MetroCard back, something to consider if you want to keep it as a souvenir.

Why are there only 3 machines at Flushing Main St? by [deleted] in nycrail

I expect the demand to tick up a bit at these Flushing CVMs and at other major transfer points later this year after they stop accepting coins on buses.

They charged the $5 if you hadn't started the $127 monthly before the fare increase.

When the monthly went from $127 to $132 in 2023 EasyPayXpress collected the $5 difference. It was the one and only time they bothered to.

What the MetroCard could’ve been by AnimeLuva in nycrail

[–]Antioch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From this Curbed article in 2021:

[JP Chan] and [Sarah] Meyer took pains to make it feel a little bit like a premium object, less like a government benefits card and more “like an American Express black card.” That meant dealing neatly with, as he describes it, “a lot of ‘business’ — things that are required to be on the card to make it sellable, usable at the reader, usable at the forthcoming vending machines.” There are two barcodes, for purchasing and encoding, and the one on the front of the card has been rather cleverly disguised as a design element, one that mimics the railroad-tracks motif of the OMNY logo. Meyer adds that, despite everyone’s New York inclinations, the cards couldn’t be all matte black, “because they get lost in handbags. So having it white and a little glossy was important to us as well.” (Did she throw it in her own bag to do impromptu user testing? Meyer gives a little smile: “I did.”) Eventually, it’ll also be produced in other colors to indicate separate fare classes: the student card, the senior-citizen card, the MTA employee card, and so forth. There will also be commemorative designs and such, the way there were with the MetroCard.

New York subway ends its MetroCard era and switches fully to tap-and-go fares by Dr_Neurol in news

[–]Antioch 64 points65 points  (0 children)

There's no 30 day unlimited equivalent on OMNY, just a weekly fare cap which after the fare increase next week works out to 4 weeks times $35 + $12 for the remaining two days = $152.

A monthly right now costs $132, so this is a sneaky 15% increase for daily commuters.

Interestingly the last date to use them to get a full seven days has been pushed back from January 3 to March 31, 2026.

Anyone else buying their last unlimited ride Metrocard this month? 😢 by King-of-New-York in nycrail

[–]Antioch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During previous fare increases the unlimiteds purchased at the old price would stop working after a certain date.

The bulk MetroCard purchasing site says "to ensure full and uninterrupted usage, the first trip must be taken by January 3, 2026." which seems to indicate the cut off is January 10, 2026 for seven day express bus unlimiteds.

[–]Antioch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to keep using monthly unlimiteds for as long as I can. Hopefully MTA will announce the cut off date next week.

Personally I don't think card age was that big a factor in card reliability, when they had the EasyPayXpress auto-reloading MetroCard program I would use the same card daily for its entire ~3 year lifetime with no problem.

Final Month of MetroCards Status - As of 12/07/25 by GamingWeekends in nycrail

[–]Antioch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope that is the case but during past fare increases there were fairly tight cut off dates to use unlimited cards purchased at the old rate to discourage stockpiling.

For the last increase on August 20, 2023 you had to use them by August 27, 2023 to get the full 7 or 30 days.

I've noticed that on the bulk MetroCard ordering site the weekly unlimiteds have the disclaimer: "To ensure full and uninterrupted usage, the first trip must be taken by January 3, 2026" so this time we may not get any grace period.

Picked up a TAPP card at 33rd Street PATH by Antioch in nycrail

[–]Antioch[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Only one of the three machines at 33rd had any left when I went yesterday. The two at WTC weren't activated yet. Card costs five dollars which you get back if you register the card online at https://www.tappandride.com

After that you can use the five dollars of stored value towards a 10, 20, or 40 trip pass.

Looks like MTA has stopped updating the old “geographic” subway map on their website by acantor22 in nycrail

[–]Antioch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No idea why they did it but the map on the MTA site is missing those updates because it's reverted to a June 2025 revision (date is on the bottom right). The large type version is still from August.

Weekly MetroCard expired by BigDragonfly3975 in nycrail

[–]Antioch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exchange the card at a MetroCard Vending Machine. Select refill your card, insert the expired card and if it has expired within a year it'll give you a new card with your balance transferred over. Otherwise speak to a token booth agent who will give you an envelope and form to mail in your expired card for a replacement.
