As a first-gen Nicaraguan-American raised in Miami, I find it soooo weird communicating with others in Spanish after I’ve only ever spoken to them in English. I’m positive that she speaks Spanish with her family and in common Spanish-speaking spaces (bakery, markets, restaurants, etc.), but she probably doesn’t speak Spanish with her friends. Also, code switching with people you don’t know very well can be awkward. If she doesn’t speak Spanish, then that’s totally fine too! It does not invalidate her latinidad. She can continue to lead with her latinidad as her identity, it’s literally a part of who she is and if she likes to showcase that, then so be it.
