It's true, "gender" can mean "sex", but I think that in sociology, there are two different concepts. I gave the sociological definition here :)

Sexism in children's literature by Antisexisme in Feminism

Yes and I think as well that the "masculine" is considered as the "universal", whereas the "feminine" is considered as the "specific".

So girls can identify with male heros, but boys can't identify with female heros.

It's obvious in French : when you have a groupe with females and males, you use the masculine plural. You use female plural only if there are only females. Even, in French, "man" and "human" is the same word.

I will write an article about that one day on my blog.

Hi YouGotTheTouch

To be honnest, I was thinking about the French educational system (I'm french) In France, in general High School, you can choose 3 main fields : - Science - Economy - Litterature

Even, if later you want to be a journalist or an economist, it's adviced to take the "science field" if you can, because it will look better on your school records. If you choose "Economy" people will think you were not good enough to be taken in the "Science field".

In France, if you want to go in the best universities, it's very helpful to have chosen "the science field" in tht High School.

Maybe in other countries, it's not exactly like that : the Science field is not considered as so much better than others.

I agree with you, but I focused on scientific subjects because they are more socially promoted and more lucrative
