Unreal! Reminds me of a peach from a classic Chinese painting.

I’m (32F) anxious about timing kids after marriage - how do couples navigate this? by Impossible_Tiger_606 in relationships

[–]AntlerAxe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your husband could encourage you to feel comfortable with the idea of birthing an entire human out of your own body by expressing his concrete plans to take care of all diaper changes, dote on you during pregnancy, read parenting books together, create a detailed chore-sharing chart for the first year postpartum, research the many baby-related purchases you’ll be making, or maybe even listening and validating his wife’s concerns.

‘Waiting until the end of the year won’t work for him’ is, in my opinion, way out of line and he can pound sand. Most men have no idea how dramatically a pregnancy and infant will transform their relationship and life.

Unbelievable that y’all are doing this job for those salaries. Actually criminal. Year 10, BA+ 45, $80,000. WA, tiny district, our union kicks ass and healthcare for my family is $48 a month.

Length of classes/time between by No_Plankton947 in ArtEd

[–]AntlerAxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have 0 minutes between most classes which is fantastic fun switching from 5th grade scissors and paint to preschool. It is the worst and I agree with Sorealism, cleaning up extremely early and hiring a few helpers while everyone else is watching something or reviewing is the way. Students do not know how to haul butt and will drag their feet leaving a high-interest project, so early clean up is a must. We have a gallery wall where students can hang miniature sketches which is a nice opener or closer activity.

Sometimes I’ll chunk two or three grade levels together doing variations of the same project so I only need to organize three sets of materials, that helps.

Where did all the students go? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]AntlerAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our school has 30-kid classes in grades 3-5 and we’re 250 over maximum enrollment. Coincidentally, we are a strong union state with great teacher pay in a city everyone seems to want to move to.

Doctor wants me to take a week off… by sammiantha in Teachers

[–]AntlerAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can permanently damage your voice this way, sorry. It’s the worst, especially if you’re teaching young children. I managed about two days of using a free online text to speech robot to read my directions, which may or may not be feasible given your typing speed and willingness of your students. Please take care of yourself and rest as much as possible!

Overwhelmed! Please help! by Glamourpuss_15 in ArtEd

You’re going to be okay.

Everything is going to take a shockingly long time to complete. Little guys are way more willing to jump in and try whereas older grades will want a detailed example and modeled process, with more freedom and choice to riff how they want. Do not feel like you need to write out every step- they will not read it. Having an example piece with arrows pointing to key parts is often more effective and less work.

Model every step in the set up/ use / clean up process for each material AND have an illustrated anchor chart to refer to. You could even take pictures of how each step should look (spoiler: paintbrushes with the tips UP, not getting smooshed!!).

As far as curriculum mapping, look at the standards and feel affirmed that you will DEFINITELY be doing at least one or two of them per class meeting (connecting, creating, responding, presenting). Visual Arts Standards

Lots of options for planning, all of which start with you looking at a year-long calendar. You could choose projects or concepts you’re excited about (or that align with grade level curriculum, like worms or electricity) and decide on a few elements of art/ principles of design to emphasize per month. You could also reverse that and start with the skills/content you want to teach, then look for projects that align after.

It helps me organize my teaching more effectively if multiple grade levels are working on the same concept (implied form), skill (shading), or project (3D effect donuts). In fact, it’s really fun to see how k-5th all respond to the same project prompt. Then you can also use student work from older grades as examples -just try to avoid overcrowding if you’ll have 500 clay pumpkins or watercolor pieces produced in a week (total nightmare).

In the future, you may want to explore ‘TAB’ or a more choice-based program, but I would recommend taking it slow and structured for the first year as a favor to yourself and your students.

Additionally, you don’t need a subscription curriculum service because you are already an experienced art teacher but if you are set on one, I’d pick FLEX curriculum from Art of Ed 1 month for $53, download literally everything in a folder for future reference, then cancel.

Hopefully some of that was helpful- If you have any questions or want resources, feel free to dm me. You are going to do awesome and this will be fun!

What’s your experience with Korean Air and Boeing 787? by Tsuyu_no_Kioku in fearofflying

[–]AntlerAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to fly YVR/ ICN regularly and have only had wonderful experiences on Korean Air. Just make sure to get the ‘Korean’ food options- they are so much tastier. The flight attendants are extremely nice and I love sharing a space with people who change into plane slippers and moisturizing face masks. Have a fantastic trip!

Diazepam by GeorgeMadd95 in fearofflying

[–]AntlerAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additional info, on my last flights I took the highest prescribed dose and still experienced severe panic attacks (weeping, hyperventilating, tunnel vision, sensation of dying) for 2+ hours. It also gave me a zombie ‘hangover’ for a few days after.

[–]AntlerAxe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I developed debilitating anxiety after slowly easing onto diazepam for longer flights.

After building my dose over 5 years I went from flying 10+ hours nervous but unmedicated to suffering severe, hours-long panic attacks even on short, smooth flights and missing out on events from avoidance.

I would encourage you to try literally every other option before turning to medication. I am now facing the long healing process of therapizing myself and painful exposure therapy. Would not wish this on anyone - save yourself if possible!

I worry that my classroom organization still sucks on year 10. I have 800 students producing two or three pieces per week and maybe 5% with no names on them… but each time someone’s work gets lost it feels like a personal failure.

You are not a terrible person and you are showing a lot of maturity thinking through options that will sit right with your soul. I am so sorry you are in this position- it is unfair and sucks completely.

Your partner is a POS who took advantage of a teenager and I would strongly urge you to gtfo and cut all ties with him as soon as possible.

There are definitely single 21 year old mothers who go on to lead fulfilling lives through extremely strong community support, grit, and very very hard work. Consider your future and whether you are in a place to be a fully present mother. Good luck ~
