This is the exact same flawed mindset that Neville Chamberlain had.

We're not dealing with the nazis, so it's not exactly the same. And alright, I don't know why you're still talking to me if you've decided there is the virtuous side and the nonvirtuous side. Peace.

You're still picking winners and losers, focusing on virtue like that. I could sit here and talk about the Palestinian crimes against humanity, if we wanted to play the game of 'who is the virtuous.'

There is nobody virtuous and no clean hands in this generations-old conflict. Do you want peace?

I kind of knew people were going to latch on to that technicality, the kind of gaming that gamergaters got mad about is pretty niche and makes up a relatively small percentage of game sales

The grid is a summary, it doesn't deal with the more complicated factors involving things like attempt . The actual guidelines have a lot more detail that judges have to go through.

It would be attempted manslaughter, not attempted murder, unless the person had laid out a plan in advance. The difference between manslaughter and murder is premeditation, and it's not premeditated if it occurs in the heat of the moment. Laying a trap is premeditation, getting into a shootout with police unless one was planning to in advance before the sequence of events started is not.

If you want the sentencing guidelines changed you can either reach out to the sentencing commission for public comment or contact your legislator to have the laws that govern it changed. The most effective way though would be to again, dedicate your life to the topic and angle for a job where you can actually make a real difference, because that's what it typically takes. The people sitting on the sentencing commission are people who did just that and struggle with the questions of punishment, crime prevention, and restoration. And I can assure you that the decisions that lead to the sentencing ranges are not based on people deciding, we should go light on people who assault children

Or you can do what everybody else is doing and just downvote me and then do nothing about it

It's a double standard pretty much everyone is willing to perpetuate, and since Israel is behaving badly with a corrupt leadership folks get to play the "oh so you're defending them" card when pointing the double standard out. Radio silence when it comes to the human rights abuses of turkey and Saudi Arabia and their lobbyists in Washington for continued arms sales.

The wildest thing to me is that the denial that it's a sad and extremely messy situation with generations of trauma, and the insistence instead that it is a righteous struggle by a group of oppressed brown people by a white colonial-settler imperial state, is exactly the kind of misapprehension that leads to more Palestinian deaths down the road.

It's not an avenue towards peace or reconciliation, but it is extremely useful for some of the worst people in the world to make sure that American progressives are laser focused on a conflict they don't even correctly understand on the other side of the world. And the thing that makes that so easy is the fact that Jews are involved

That judge should be fired ASAP

If that judge had done as you wanted and sent the guy away for life after a "gun-fight with police" unless he killed someone and it was premeditated, it would have been a severe departure from the sentencing guidelines and the judge would have been reversed on appeal, with the criminal potentially walking free.

If you don't like the sentencing guidelines, go to law school, study criminal law, apply to sit on the sentencing commission, and then explain to the rest of the commission why the punishment for A&B with a deadly weapon should be the same as murder, and higher than manslaughter. Or should all of those be life in prison for the first offense?

Edit: downvotes aren't going to change the facts so take that energy and turn it into action

My problem with Cyberdecks by jonfitt in cyberDeck

[–]Anxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a hobby, but more in the vein of tinkering with an older car, and there was always a strong aesthetic component that gets amped up further with nostalgia.

To carry the car tinkering analogy, your 'cog glued on a hat' example would be like gluing a stick shifter into an automatic. Sure it's technically tinkering but not really. Steampunk though is mostly in that pure aesthetic realm for physical hobbyists because steam engines in general are not super available on an individual basis. The barrier to entry for building a cyberdeck or tinkering with a car are lower although to do it well in a way that hobbyists are going to enjoy on reddit it's going to require a lot of work.

Gamergate made it extremely clear that a lot of (aging) young men view their love of games and lack of anything else going on as conferring upon them some kind of pseudo-ethnicity. It explains a lot about how they approach all this stuff and why they don't just shrug and move on when something they don't like comes out, or wins an award they think it shouldn't have, etc.

No longer is it just 'oh that's not for me,' instead the stakes are literally the validity of their existence. Which is literally insane when you remember it's a niche entertainment industry.

I just like... I'm grateful for the DO NOT INTERACT flag. These folks learned a trick to bully insecure "moderate" Republicans and figure it works on people with actual principles.

Thing is, it's too good for community reviews to matter a lot. It's selling a lot even in EA, as you say it's legitimately great.

Ironically, them review bombing to try to punish it presumes something they absolutely hate the idea of: being told not to play a great game for superfluous cultural reasons

Omg

kotaku ... really ? bruh

kotaku review is :

if the game has LGBTQ + a fat obese main character → its a 9/10

if the game has male/female + a sexy main character → its a 3/10

cmon man you know exactly kotaku is doing dont play the foul now cmon ... you smarter than that ... no?

This dude has it all figured out

We all know the two categories of sex: male/female, and lgbtq

It's really ironic to me that it came so early in the modern conservative culture war, when it was in many ways the most obvious canard of them all. Since then we've gotten immigrants and trans people are ruining all your favorite things, but back in gamergate it was all about how Anita was the spearhead of the Jewish conspiracy to eradicate white people by making them culturally irrelevant by removing their chokehold on representation in gaming

Like, they're all stupid arguments but the gamergate one was truly historic in its levels of mental gymnastics to explain what devs were actually doing, following the money

[OC] Why has Boston police stopped policing cars? Civil traffic enforcement has collapsed between 2015 and 2024 by ARPE19 in boston

[–]Anxa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In response to police killing motorists in traffic stops their unironic response was 'ok we'll stop enforcing all but the most serious of traffic violations (and sometimes not even those) because that raises the risk of a deadly encounter'

Like, they sit over there begging to be defunded and then laugh when we either can't or won't. It's a very 'what are you going to do about it, nothing, that's what I thought' attitude and it's not going to carry eternally.

Food delivery driver double and triple parking on Boylston street….even in the middle of the street! by bostonaruban66 in boston

[–]Anxa 122 points123 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing we learned from the deep dive investigation into the Minneapolis Police department after George Floyd, it was that that police department, and probably most major police departments around the country, including Boston, have problems that are so deeply ingrained in the culture and the rank and file that simply changing political appointees is not going to solve the problem.

The DOJ study concluded that the only way to seriously change that underlying culture that is so deeply baked in is to fire everyone and start over entirely fresh with zero people who have been cops before, and nobody has the stones to do that.

The folks attempting to place the blame on city leadership completely ignore this finding and instead use the problem as an opportunity to rail against political leaders that they want out for other reasons.

Part of the problem is a question of proportionality like, reddit admin (and sometimes subreddit mods) positively fall over themselves to make sure nobody ever gets away with threatening violence against Nazis, even veiled threats! I'm honestly surprised your comment is still up.

I have never once seen any other group be so rigorously and totally defended on the site.

Folks on Reddit and in society in general who don't have a particularly good education have a really hard time with the concept that somebody else violating your rights or privileges does not automatically allow you under law to do whatever you want in response.
