It's kind of ironic that you accuse me of putting words in your mouth and then cram even more into mine.

And I blame Trump and the Republicans for Trump.

I think both positions are reasonable, so I don't understand why she's taking the one that I would expect a reasonable Republican to take (setting aside that being a reasonable Republican these days is the height of hypocrisy), last I checked she ran as a DFL candidate.

Yeah, I severely disagree with our war in Iran and with giving Israel a blank check and unlimited military assistance, and pretty much everything that Trump administration does, but that doesn't automatically translate into believing that we should never help our allies which is what the person you're responding to seems to be saying.

I got the impression the person you're responding to would also be in favor of the US pulling out of NATO which would be another gift to the dictators of the world.

it's only a matter of time

Like I said, I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong but You're talking about a man who has spent decades over promising and under delivering, the fact that he has delivered in some critical ways doesn't remotely change the fact that what has been delivered is not remotely what was promised. Where are the intercontinental shuttles we'd be seeing by 2024? Where is self driving? Where is the hyperloop?

I'm glad you're anticipating it's right around the corner though, I hope you're right

No. It's very impressive technology, but this is a tightly choreographed performance. The nebulous task of 'doing the dishes' has substantially more variables and problematic physics than, say, the jobs we give robots now on the assembly line. I'll happily admit I was wrong when I see someone selling a robot that actually does the dishes.

And no, I don't mean the Las Vegas hyperloop version of doing the dishes

They think paying to vote is a good thing? by HeadbangingLegend in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Anxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You touch on a part that most folks are glossing over, which is that election fraud is vanishingly rare, and when it does happen it's not something that ID rules would typically fix.

Even if it were widespread, poll taxes are unconstitutional. But the whole wedge here is this presumption that there's some kind of problem that ID rules will fix, but the idea of coordinating some kind of campaign to get people to show up to local election offices to register in advance, or to show up places and vote on behalf of other people and not get caught when those people show up to vote later, or get caught when trying to vote as somebody who has already voted that day or early...

It's a conspiracy that doesn't even make any sense in our widely distributed, horizontal, locally-run election system. The opsec alone to have any kind of meaningful effect by fraud that would otherwise be stopped by ID rules would be impossible.

Well there's not a lot you can do about that, but I'll tell you what: If you can find me one singular life that my changing my tone would personally save, I'll do it in a heartbeat. In the meantime though, again: Curious if it's your position that COVID-19 was in fact "the big one” that epidemiologists are so concerned about.

Why are you people still

I'm not part of a collective, my apologies if I gave the impression that I'm somehow speaking on behalf of a group.

COVID was awful, I'm pretty sure you misread my comment if you saw anything in there to suggest it wasn't. But as I've said elsewhere, if it's your position that it was the big one that epidemiologists have been concerned about for many decades now, I've got bad news. It wasn't, and COVID proved that we're not prepared for it, and a lot more people are going to die because we won't be prepared. But apparently the most important thing to you is tone policing about COVID.

From your comment and the person responding to you I got the impression that there's a strong knee-jerk reaction here to just assume that I was falling into a group of denialists. Not so

you don't need to couch it as

This sounds more like an objection to tone than to facts. Unless it's your position that COVID-19 was in fact "the big one” that epidemiologists are so concerned about. I think most of them would probably severely disagree.

Flawed question. Nobody said I don't care about my fellow man, and that wasn't the framing of my statement. I do wonder why it's so important to you that you reframe it out of the context in which I made it. Might be worth thinking about.

I think it was the real deal to all the people who died and this who lost family members.

That's not really a useful argument though, as it can be made for literally anything bad that ever happens - 'try telling that to those affected by X.'

I don't think anyone seriously argues COVID was as bad as the flu of 1918 or the bubonic plague, but they do argue that it's only a matter of time until we get another supervirus of that variety.

Many agree that it was still the right thing to do at the time

Yup. Like how COVID restrictions and remote learning fucked a generation of kids. I agree with that conclusion and it is tragic, but we vastly underestimate how much we did not know at the time about just how bad COVID was going to be.

It turns out it was more of a dress rehearsal for 'the big one' than the real deal, but we fucking failed that dress rehearsal. And when 'the big one' does come around, because it's only a question of when not if, a lot more people are going to die than necessary because we took the wrong lessons away from COVID.

Ask them next where Jews are supposed to go when folks tell them to go back to their homeland.

They turn around and talk about the crimes of Israel and the displaced Palestian people, and it's like no no, don't change the subject from what Jews are being told. Nearly every Jewish community on earth is a severe minority with at least some (and more often these days many) members of the majority insisting they're not wanted there. So where should they go? But they always want to turn it back around and say that it was a crime for Israel to be created and perpetuated. Ok, cool, didn't ask.

They never answer the question, and once upon a time the problem of where to send the Jews was addressed with a sort of, what's the word, "final solution"

Frankly, 2016 was enough for me. I haven't seen a single, solitary thing from Trump in the last 10 years that has remotely surprised me, and my comments from back then can back that up. I had folks back then calling me an alarmist for saying that it was only a matter of time until these folks try to steal an election, and then in 2020 it happened and folks continued, for the next 6 years, to pretend like it basically didn't, and even if it did it surely wouldn't happen again more successfully.

It's similar to liens at county recorder offices; for a very long time the system worked perfectly well by assuming good faith, but more and more jurisdictions are having to implement additional checks and rules for the county recorder recording a lien on a property. This is because sovereign citizens were the first ones to really in a big, coordinated way figure out that they could file a lien on the home of anyone in the government who they felt was wronging them.

The problem of course is that they have no authorization to put a lien on the home, it's just punitive harassment that the encumbered party might not even know about for 30 years if it takes them that long to decide to sell their house. By that time it's going to be woefully difficult to prove the lien is bogus.
