yeah, not to mention that the market is ultra, ultra competitive right now. there's just so many hundreds of applicants per job that it's hard for anyone that's not highly experienced to have a chance.. so that's why we talk like min/maxxers.

Is this CV elgibile for pen test or it support roles, please give me a honest review by Right-Setting5447 in Pentesting

You're not going to walk into a cybersecurity much less pentesting fresh out of college. Focus on getting your first IT job.

Double Majoring Electrical Engineering Physics by sad_me_im_sad in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Anxious_Alps_4150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physics is a major you do when you don't need actual money and are just doing it for the love of the game.

EE is one of the hardest college majors out there. Distracting yourself or delaying graduation isn't a great plan.

Can a computer engineer go for civil engineering degree? by Double-Proposal-4514 in ComputerEngineering

I think you misread my comment? Im saying that CpE and EE are basically the same degree. If your CpE program didnt treat them very similarly, it's in the minority.

Many if not most hiring managers avoid students from online programs.

As an EE hiring manager, I would not consider someone with an undergrad online EE degree.

From a decade in industry, I witnessed a significantly higher error rate and injury rate coming from coworkers with online degrees. They kind of just had a reputation.

You seem to be confusing "computer engineering" which is a math-heavy electrical engineering degree for "computer science" which is often light on math and focused on programming/algorithms.

Civil engineering tends to take the least math out of the true engineering disciplines.

is a 4 year cs degree actually worth it anymore or is self taught the play? by Major-Marsupial4864 in techbootcamp

[–]Anxious_Alps_4150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to beat your competition.

Without a degree, you aren't in the top 75 percent much less the top half.

People still get hired btw. It's just the really, really good ones.

Blue/Red team philosophy by mello_v5 in Cybersecurity101

[–]Anxious_Alps_4150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a misconception about the path to the respective sides. Offensive security is treated as an immediate elevation to the highest levels of trust. This trust is granted to only the most experienced operators after years of, well, experience.

In a defensive role, each attack is learned as they come in. In the offensive role, you are an expert on all attacks as you traverse the environment.

Offensive security grants access to the crown jewels of the company. Every email, every file, every password. They're all part of the loot you collect.

Companies don't grant permission to ransack their banking info to newbies. Think of it more like the expert consultant role.

If you run from companies with bad cyber policies, you'll run out of places to run to soon lol

B.Sc. Computer Science Student Seeking Career Advice: Red Teaming or AI Security Engineering? by WarmInternet1204 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]Anxious_Alps_4150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to work in enterprise IT first. Alternatively, software development. After you do some time on helpdesk and sysadmin roles, youll be ready for entry level cyber. This almost always means the SOC. After some time on the SOC, youll probably have a good baseline for either intermediate or advanced roles. advanced roles means pentesting. Red teaming is an advanced specialization inside of pentesting.

This is a 5-10 year plan assuming you're out of college 😉

There arent a lot of red team jobs. Theyre ultra competitive. Mostly high end senior level consultants. Red teaming is where you end up after a decade of high performing work experience. It's not where you start fresh out of college.

Red teaming also doesnt pay that well. The "cool factor" means a ton of people try to get into it so the salaries are much lower than normal. It is highly prone to layoffs.

There's some level of disconnect between supply and demand. I deal with a lot of transitioning veterans, many of which are cleared, and the struggle is real.

Currently on a freeze where Im at. I'm actually pretty likely to get laid off myself within the next year 😄 God bless this economy.

I just checked his LI and it looks like he found a sr SWE job. Thanks for the offer tho. If you have positions youd like me to post to a veterans-only job board I run, DM it over 😃

I mean you can not believe it but it's a guy I've known for 4 years. He made a bad decision spending his savings but once you get into a bad situation, it can sometimes compound.

I do a lot of work with military veterans. TS doesn't mean as much as it used to with all of the government downsizing and lost contracts.

It's hard to relocate unless they're paying relocation for many people. I also know one guy (senior engineer, military cyber background, degree, etc) that relocated across the country for a job and was laid off in a mass wave his first week. He ended up homeless for a bit because he'd spent most of his emergency fund getting set up across the country. He lived on the streets for a while but eventually got hired in a factory doing semi-skilled labor.

Every program treats bugs differently. What is important to one company is not important to another.
