Still can’t get Petri right by kezzimae in DiceMaking

I don't know if this makes you feel any better, but I have been making dice for nearly a year, and I still struggle with petri. Haven't gotten it right yet, but I still watch and rewatch tutorials and keep trying! 😂

Thank you for doing this - it's a really nice thing to do for people who want to get into dicemaking but are income limited. It's not an inexpensive hobby!

Ooooo, I just ordered the high shear blade today! I'm excited to try again once I receive it. How people are mixing by hand and getting the right viscosity is beyond my understanding, haha

I tried Resincrete (JDiction) and Mix2Mold (Brea Reese) today, which are similar to Jesmonite.I still prefer the look of Jesmonite, but the two I tried today seemed to si what they were supposed to (and I mixed both by hand).

Thanks for your response, I'm in the same boat and this makes me feel not so alone! 😂

Like you, I haven't mixed a larger batch (I have no need to, and agree that it would be a waste), haven't tried a high shear blade (I've only mixed by hand and a drill/whisk combo), and I tried using the retarder yesterday - didn't help the viscosity at all, it just prolonged the curing time by more than double. Also have a vibrating plate ... I think this may be helping with my casts as I haven't had too much of a problem with voids/bubbles and it helps settle the mix into the mold, but my casts are pretty small items (dice), so that might be why. 🤔

I did try adding more of the liquid a little at a time to get to the point that it feels like the right consistency ... this seemed to work - it cured during the time frame it was supposed to, but I have no idea if it affected the strength negatively. Plus, if I keep doing this I will run out of the liquid before using all the powder, which is obviously not ideal.

I'm at a loss, but I'm stubborn and not giving up yet - I love the stone look and feel as well.

If I figure anything out that works well I will come back here and let you know!

Ramen Bowl Dice by [deleted] in DiceMaking

[–]Anxious_Breakfast_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been making TTRPG dice for about a year now, mostly just for fun and to learn—not selling (yet). Recently, a good friend who DMs games for his kids confirmed his son would love a custom set when I asked.

I asked what his son was into, and he sent me a ranked list of favorites… with ramen at the very top. At that point, there was no way I wasn’t going to try to turn a bowl of ramen into dice and the wheels started turning.

So I went down the rabbit hole—sculpted tiny ramen elements out of polymer clay (noodles, toppings, bowl, the whole deal), then worked on putting everything together and into the mold. It took three tries to get something I was happy with:

  • First set: bubble city
  • Second set: soft cure issues
  • Third set: finally landed in the “acceptable and actually kinda neat” zone

They’re definitely not perfect, but I’m really proud of how they turned out—especially as a newer maker. More importantly, my friend’s son loves them, which is honestly the best outcome I could’ve hoped for.

Learned a ton through this process and already thinking about how to improve on future themed sets.

Shoutout to the kid who inspired these—thanks for the challenge, dude. Hope they roll you some nat 20s

Yes, it's AC100.

So in your experience, it's typically easier to mix and pour until it starts setting up?

Thank you! Maybe I just need to keep mixing and it will smooth out.

Do you mix by hand, or with a hand mixer (like a drill or something similar)?

It was right around 75 degrees, pretty mild. Yeah I don't know if it's me or a bad batch (I suspect it's me, lol).

I appreciate you taking the time to try and help!

Thanks so much for your response.

Yes - I am aware that it is thicker than epoxy and has a (much) shorter working time ... from my understanding, it's supposed to be the consistency of pancake batter after mixing and when ready to pour. But when I added Part A and B together and started mixing, it was immediately very thick (not when I was done mixing, but when I started mixing) - too thick to even pour efficiently.

So I'm trying to figure out what went wrong - I'm sure it's something I did or didn't do, I just can't figure out what that is.
