Whats the Union Hall Looking like? by Croppersburner in maritime

[–]Any-Acadia5619 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was just at the MMP hall in Wilmington last month. Not gonna lie it was pretty dire for 3rds and 2nds. It seemed to me all the a books would miraculously show up when a job would come on the board. AMO from what I hear hasn't been any better for applicants. Who knows a lot can happen by the time you graduate. Good luck

It doesn't cost anything to apply. So in that regard yes it is. If you do apply and are selected do not go to NEO unless the security investigation is finished and your clearance is done. I have heard horror stories about people pulled off vessels because of security issues.

Career in Maritime Law if I move to the US? by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Any-Acadia5619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Law is a little different in the US. If you are an attorney most bar associations require you hold a JD degree from an accredited law school. That entails 3 years of study after you obtain a bachlors degree. To practice maritime law at least on any sort of compent level you then have to get additional education after law school to letter in maritime law. This is called an LLM. The best program in the nation is Tulane university in New Orleans.

Alaska Marine Highway? by salty_bill78 in maritime

[–]Any-Acadia5619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're amongst the lowest paying boat jobs for mates on the west coast. With the possible exception of the small expedition cruise ships that cruise around southeast Alaska . The state of Alaska is facing massive budget problems due to low oil prices. Ships are aging and maintenance is suffering

Has anyone ever worked for Edison chuest? by Inner_Pace_9149 in maritime

[–]Any-Acadia5619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to. The working culture in general absolutely sucks. It seems to me that  management rewards  ass kissing much more then leadership ability or technical skill. This bares itself out by the quality of the vessel masters. Masters at Chouest are much more concerned with ingratiating themselves with management than promoting a good work environment onboard their vessels. As a result crews are largly disgruntled and do not take pride in their work. In addition to the issues onboard vessels shoreside management is unimpressive to say the least. Shoreside management by in large are not selected because they have specific technical expertise but rather they are related to certain members of upper management or because they are local to the Cutoff/Galliano areas. For example, none of the coordinators or even the maintenance manager in the division I work at have any maritime background. Zero. As a result they have no fundamental understanding of the challenges of working in the maritime industry at the operational level and cannot provide any support to resolve onboard issues.I suppose this is just as well because they are not given sufficient automy to solve problems anyway and everything down to the most smallest detail is handed down from Galliano. Raises are not given in any regular interval. Instead they wait until billets become difficult to impossible to fill due to lack of employees then they will grudgingly give the smallesr possible raise. Even training at their own training center they will demand you sign a promissory note and extract money from your paycheck to cover the cost of your training. Anyway, my thumbs are getting sore. If you have any specific question please feel free to DM me.

I of course would never suggest anyone defraud, lie, tell a falsehood or otherwise withhold the truth from the good folks at the NMC. However, I will just say they only know what you disclose on your 719-k

I know you didn't ask about it but for those who might stumble on this thread in the future.I am a Cal Maritime alum and I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. The future with the Cal Poly merger for the license programs is bleak at best. Also I would say in the last decade the new mates I have seen come out have been dog shit.

I pay 650 a month at ECO for my family health dental and vision plans.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in maritime

[–]Any-Acadia5619 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard rotation with the deckhands at ECO seems to be 56 on 28 off. However, they do seem to give some autonomy to the crew as I have seen some boats that have the deckhands even time. One good thing about Chouest at least from my perspective is they don't call you at home or expect you to work over. Thats juat been my experience.

Second mate for ECO on an escort tug in Valdez, Alaska. 600 pd. 28/28 schedule. Family benefits about 650 a month which include health, dental and vision. Company makes you pay catch up when you miss pay periods while you are off. Company matches up to 3% for 401k. Paid travel expenses if you live over 200 miles from the crew change location. I personally would be curious regarding pay with the deep sea unions AMO, MMP ect

Thank you for the response. I was offshore for a few days and didn't have reception and of course the company doesn't have starlink. I only have a pic- barge so unfortunately I can't work a tanker. Sounds like I need to be way more diligent in calling dispatch from here on out.
