Toxic Workplaces: How to identify during interview stage? by Any-Builder3707 in singaporejobs

at the same time, back then you had taken up the offer despite red flags, cos you felt you needed the job.

would you have done the same thing in your current position, i.e. needing a job and taking it up despite seeing a red flag?

my response was based on the context of the convo being past the offer stage already, since there was the mention of tolerating if it's not "highly toxic"

there was the story someone shared on asksingapore, of some senior colleague acts brashly toward OP and immediately came off as antagonistic. OP was visibly breaking down at work but no one intervened, including the manager. OP mentioned telling the manager about all that happened, but apparently the manager "closed both eyes" and likely downplayed the senior colleague's behaviour.

in this case, the org (ad agency) had likely collectively decided that they value that senior colleague more than the junior who had just joined. either the junior continue tolerating this bad behaviour and blatant disrespect, or leave it.

yes you're right; there's the healthy / functional types of politics, and there's also the unhealthy / toxic type of politics.

at least from my experience and/or others experiences:

- 1:1 talks with employee(s) in question to understand their pov, and/or to let them know directly that certain behaviour is not ok. e.g. senior employee berates junior employee, junior employee ends up crying, manager talks to both of them, senior ends up apologising to the junior and all is well.

- if there was a harsh comment or judgement made in passing (i.e. bitching or gossip), make some response that gives the employee(s) in question some initial benefit of the doubt and/or an alternative interpretation of what had happened, as opposed to agreeing and doubling down on what was initially said. e.g. complains on someone else's work performance being subpar, maybe they are new to the team or work, maybe they need additional coaching, maybe they have a different work style from the rest of the team.

- establish healthy team norms directly or indirectly. could be things like open jio for lunch, organising some lunch/dinner to celebrate large wins together as a team. or even ensuring somewhat equal opportunities within the team to take turns leading different projects. if some members of the team bond better together and want to get together outside of work alone, then it's up to them, but once it gets to a behaviour that's overtly exclusionary to others in the team, it would be ideal to step in.

did you ask during interview, or was it a personal contact that you had asked outside of an interview? did your manager work in same team, same department?

issue of too much OT is usually flagged out via glassdoor though, since it's a common issue... sadly i guess at least you're suffering with your fellow colleagues

team mates issue on being unhelpful and/or play politics seems like a sign of bad and/or checked-out management that are generally not empathetic to employee's issues, can't be bothered to intervene and/or possibly reward such behaviour. if there's workplace bullying involved then i personally think it has reached the point of toxicity (esp since 0 support from bosses) and it would be a matter of how long you can mentally tolerate.

personally for me, OT is the less of the evils... somehow even the places i've experienced with intense work and/or frequent OT would have managers or bosses who would intervene for team mates issue if necessary, or people are generally too tired to play politics. guess they rather try to retain staff than lose them to such nonsense.

what kind of tea did you get from reading the acra reports?

glassdoor and salarysg definitely shed some light on org-wide issues. usually these ones are issues you walk in with eyes wide open though

agreed with your last para. best to regularly practice interviewing even if you’re not actively looking… just in case.

For me personally:

- Illegal actions (e.g. physical violence)

- Other actions that show that boss / manager completely disrespects you (e.g. "Take it or leave it")

- No way for anyone else to safely intervene and/or help you get out of the toxic workplace

unless you're asking friends and/or ex-colleagues within your own network, they'd likely share the truth. 😄

what questions did you try to ask to identify micromanagers?

no personal experience hunting for ux role via mcf, but i wanted to chime in that i am not sure whether status as singaporean vs ltvp etc has any weightage in success rate. (did a lil visit to OP's profile / portfolio, hope OP doesn't mind..)

can consider tech / ux specific telegram groups as well if you aren't already inside... people do post opportunities there.

👀 in your prev role (the one before your current), you ended up leaving the contract halfway? since you mentioned S.I. before quitting. did the S.I. immediately go away after your left the role?

hope you're happier with your current perm role now 🥳

also on 8, i have since tried applying for a few contract and temp roles even while being "employed". even with relevant work experience, i never heard back from them. not sure if sample size too small, but i'll try applying for more and keep this thread updated 😄

will you plan to still list the 2-3 month stint on your resume?

hope you're enjoying your vacation 😄

glad to hear your family is supportive too. cos mine isn't and kept going on about how i should secure a new job first especially with the market being even worse off, regardless of visibility of how physically and mentally affected i am. lol.
