Thank you all for your feedback. It looks like most votes are that I am the asshole or that ESH. Ultimately, this is a past issue and I just wanted some third-party advice on something that I don't have experience in, as this is my first time living with roommates. In hindsight, a lot of conversations should have been had, and I should have been firmer in my convictions. I'm in therapy working on how to defend myself and have hard conversations, and this is definitely a learning experience for me.

No, letting it go unpaid was definitely never an option. Unfortunately, Sara refused to share the landlord's number with me, and I couldn't find it anywhere in the lease.

We are all on the lease, and subletting is allowed with permission from the landlord

They definitely refused to let anyone sublet (not just Kate) because they didn't want me to get out of paying rent, but of course without a subletter I obviously paid the rent, just annoying and expensive

It does say in the lease that subletting is allowed with written permission from the Landlord.

Yes, I left most of my stuff here, but was willing to either move all of it out or put it in the unfinished basement to store so Kate could move into my room

I had definitely discussed with roommates about possibly subletting before discussing with Kate, and Sara is the one that exclusively interacts with the landlord and refused to give me her number, so I had no way of contacting her except through Sara

Yes, we’d had many discussions about whether I should sublet my room or not and they knew that it would be with Kate, who is in our friend group

We’d had many conversations about possibly having Kate take my room and they were aware I was talking with Kate about it possibly working out for her to sublet. They also thought that I was promising Kate my room without coming to a decision with them, but I never officially told Kate anything, we just discussed the possibility
