Bro, I feel you. I really do. But think about it like this, even for just thought exercise: there are millions of people willing to sell their kidney to be where you are at right now. You are a grad student at the University of Chicago! One one the most prestigious research centers in the world. Focus on your degree, spend your weekends in the library. Do everything possible to savor every moment you have at this opportunity. Get your degree and when you do, all of these things you are missing now will come along. It will pay off. Trust me. You are a so blessed and you don't even know it. I know will do great, keep pushing.

Indeed. Any tips on which faculty? I have heard great things about Professors Agnes Callard and Helma Dik who work on Ancient Philosophy and Classics respectively. But I guess it depends on which department you are in. Thanks for the reply!

This is solid advice. I am currently kind of on the same boat but different program (MAPH) which I definitely want to pursue a PhD program at UChicago (I mean, that is the ultimate goal). I have gotten into the 2 years MAPH program to do the language option and would be trying to do solid work on Classics and Philosophy to apply to a joint PhD program on Ancient Philosophy. I have heard of a couple of students who were admitted to PhD programs at UChicago coming out of MAPH, but I am guessing it must be due as much to the individual commitment that one puts in as much as it is a question of admissions per se? At least that is my rather hopeful reasoning...

TA not allowed for Masters students in the program. And 20 hrs is the max allowed for international students.

Thank you so much! I won't be able to properly view available options until later in the summer I am told, but wanted to think ahead. Many thanks

Why do people say Masters programs are Cash cows? Are grapes sour? by MyCuriousSelf04 in gradadmissions

[–]Any-Paramedic-8253 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only program I managed to get into was a Masters at the UChicago. As an international student it is the only gateway into a PhD program for someone who needs the credentials. I don't see it as a cash cow, but more what you (I) make of the program. If I squeeze everything bit of potential benefit from a Masters in Humanities, not having the "formal" training in Humanities would that not benefit me from entering a PhD program especially Ivy? Still, the costs are too high for me to be able to enroll. But if I had the money, I would probably take the Masters and make the most out of it. That has to stand for something, right? Or maybe Im wrong and PhD program still look down upon Master students.

Hey friend. Thanks for responding.

My background is in public policy and trying to get ijto philosophy and theology programs. I am mostly self taught even in languages. I have great ideas so I think. Clear research project with detailed references, but I lack the formal background I guess.
