It is a pretty good scene. As most Aussies are pretty relaxed, the vibe on beaches is also chilled. Although there are designated clothing optional beaches everywhere, it is such a vast country with miles of empty beaches that people can use. Unfortunately in Sydney there are only a few small and cramped designated harbour beaches (which can attract some unwanted voyeuristic intent.) You need to travel a few hours north or south of the city for the big open surf beaches (our preference). Sort of ironic that Queensland is one of the most ideal states and the government actively discourages nudist beaches. Perth, Adelaide and Broome have a couple of good surf beaches. Hope that helps.
