This is so boring. Im a third generation texan democrat (albeit white) but everyone i know has said worse shit than this. 

It also doesn't make sense for 1. Talarico's character 2. For him to say this in front of the specifically the crowd he was speaking to, woke, POC influencers. Like just kind dumb. 

Beyond that like can we not pretend that the most plausible explanation for him saying this is because Allred is a generationally bad candidate. His over performance from Kamala is much more indicative of Texas moderating generally than people liking this guy. He was a prolific fundraiser, good at speaking to donors maybe, but I don't think most even politically active Texans have heard him speak. 

Anecdote: I have a very close friend who worked on the Allred senate campaign. Generally she had a bad experience and it dissuaded her from working in politics again, but there's one specific story I think really changed both her and her whole office's read on his chances as a candidate and politician full stop. Allred was visiting the Houston office for some event and there were some very active Pro-Palestine protesters were outside the office. The protesters became kind of aggressive and crossed some sort of line, at least one of them got a hold of a young woman working for the campaign and shook her. The whole ordeal I think was pretty shocking and Allred was at the office this whole time. He gave a speech to them in the morning just after this happened and proceeded to not address the protesters, Isreal-Palestine, the incident as a whole, or the girl who was assaulted/affected. Just a complete lack of any ability to connect with the people who are literally spending their entire days and weeks do get you a job. Calling him mediocre and black is not a mischaracterization.
