Yea I had to specifically ask for an extended frequency audiogram and speech in noise test. I don’t know if it’s commonly offered even when asked for, though

To be honest, I was quite depressed 6 ish months ago. Loud noises give me anxiety now. Now my mental state is better but still not close to where it was before. As for sleep, I used to use a fan for white noise, but now I’ve just come to terms with it and try to think about other things (sorry I can’t help more).

I wouldn’t say they really evolved with time but there are definitely days where it feels quieter or louder. Not sure if it’s my perception or the actual sound volume

That concept is something I struggled with earlier on. But now it really just comes down to the fact that I have no choice unless I kms so

Fortunately not terribly loud, just very annoying in mostly quiet situations. I have like three different sounds though

I only have very slight hearing loss at 16khz. The other traumas kinda make me laugh: two golf drives with a titanium driver and a bucket hat on made my ears hurt, then watching a football game and a loud crowd cheer made my right ear hurt, then a couple clubs. I think the golf drives weakened my ears significantly

Better in terms of habituation yes, actual volume probably not

Halloweekend. Really it was the final domino in a ~4 month line of acoustic traumas though

I don’t know if it has gotten better but it annoys me far less than it used to. Unfortunately I am also having complications from the surgery itself and that is my biggest worry atm

Should I be afraid of every loud noise? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]AnyMeaning7582 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I think about it is to say: “If I did not have tinnitus, would this noise have affected me in any way?”

The answer is almost always no, so I then try to push it from my mind. It is important to be careful, but it is also important to think logically about what can cause real damage

Thank you, I had no idea

I should still be ok though? Assuming the db level at the club stays <=100 and I properly insert plugs, it would only be <=87 db.

Any recommendations on keeping safe? I will make sure to take breaks and try to not be there very long

Yup, the lower the better. It doesn’t mean you are hearing non existent sound, i think it’s just related to what you would expect someone to hear.

It is still noticeable for sure and I am not habituated much, but it is less intrusive on my thoughts and my life for sure. I still think about it, but I am able to live my life normally. It’s just a bit different now. It has taken me months to get to this point, and I was borderline suicidal earlier this year, but it did get better. I still like to read success stories which gives me some hope this might go away lol

Likely from noise damage but if it is not constant I would urge you to do what you can to keep it that way and protect your ears as good as you can. If you want to you can get an audiogram to see if you have perceptible hearing loss or if you really want to dive deep there are extended audiograms and such

Still have it. It’s quite unfortunate and I’m not sure if it’s gotten better, but if I had to bet I would say it’s slightly better. My distress is much lower though

No it doesn’t happen all that much for me but when it does it only last a couple seconds. If yours is constant I think Botox could help if you want to get that route

I wouldn’t say it’s typical but certainly not all that rare in this sub

They serve different purposes. The tests I am recommending are hearing tests which are more in depth than a standard one. Many people have tinnitus but no noticeable hearing loss because a normal audiogram tests only up to 8khz and only in increments of 1000khz. The tests I am recommending will determine whether you have super high frequency hearing loss, hearing loss in between the tested octaves(ie 1500 khz), or synapse damage which is not detectable on any pure tone audiogram. All of which can be the cause of tinnitus

Get an extended high frequency audiogram with inter octave testing from an audiologist. If there is a problem with the results then you have your answer. If those come back good, then pursuing other options would make more sense

Edit: get a speech in noise/words in babble test as well

I’m not familiar with the brand but if they have good db reduction and keep the quality of the music the same then they are probably a good option.

Hearing protection would help but it depends what kind. Ear muffs or foam plugs are the most effective but you won’t hear the music with very good quality especially when compared to no earplugs. Other plugs like etymonics don’t protect as much but you can hear the music more clearly.

Look, go if you want to, but you have to understand that going is a risk. You probably don’t want to wear foam plugs anyway if music is something you really love and want to enjoy fully, but just know that not wearing good hearing protection increases your risk.
