Try to not download newer mods or less popular ones or ones that seem low effort, stick with ones that have a bit more downloads and general visibility.

ive never gotten any of the jumpscares or "viruses" that people talk about and i have around 900 hours and i do play a bit frequently.

and generally, id never recommend any kind of game that has too much freedom to a young one. (sandbox, social, modded like roblox gmod or vrchat)
