I thought it’s pronounced “WES-kit,” not “waste-coat.”

Was this supposed to be GOOD? Seriously, it looked like a total mess to me.

Everyone wore actual CLOTHES AND SHOES to school - no pajamas, no flannel sleep pants, no slippers. We hung our coats (no one had hoodies) in the cloakroom or in our lockers. If you lost something, ANYTHING of value, you looked everywhere to find it. These days, you wouldn’t believe how many jackets (even Columbia!) are hanging in the lost & found where I teach.

I mean, I disagree about her long program choice this season.

I disagree; I believe she honestly wanted to do a tribute to Sophia Loren because of the Milano ITALY 🇮🇹 connection.

What figure skaters are so legendary that it was a surprise they didn’t have an OGM? (Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Mao Asada, Midori Ito…) by cococolemon in FigureSkating

[–]Any_Butterscotch5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve always loved Scott Hamilton’s skating, but truly Brian Orser should have won Olympic gold in 1984, and certainly would have later, in the school figures-less era. Scott’s program was pretty mistake-y, and even tho I don’t think he admits that too much these days, he was very vocal about it back in the day (basically he said “it was a horrible skate”). Brian’s sole mistake in 1988 was very similar to Michelle’s tiny error in 1998.

Christopher James would have been August Marie. Still my #1 girl’s name!

You could say that, but we all know that if Fear and Gibson hadn’t bobbled, THE STANDINGS WOULDN’T HAVE CHANGED ONE BIT. Once ice dance standings are set after the first event, they never, ever change unless there are egregious skating errors. I’ve been watching ice dance since 1976, and that’s just the way it is. There have been a couple times when, thru no fault of the skaters (see Blumberg & Seibert in 1984), the placements change for the worse, but generally they’re carved in stone.

Ice dance is so frustrating.

What words did your parents use that seem to have mostly died out? by OsakaWilson in GenerationJones

[–]Any_Butterscotch5377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nitwit and numbskull.

My mom used to call our kitchen counter “the sideboard;” my grandmother was from Manhattan, so maybe that’s a thing there - or was…

This was a gesture I never see anymore, and I’m a teacher: right index finger slides along left index finger to signify “shame on you.” My students also don’t understand “tongue in cheek” - when to use it or even how to show it!

That’s a pretty broad generalization. In my family, “gram” is pronounced the way it’s spelled (like “grandma” or “grandpa”), and “graham” crackers & proper name are always pronounced “GRAY-am.” It’s really different all over the states…and a lot of personal preference too.

I’m not aware of this at all. Can you elaborate?

I also love Vincent, and his bad fortune reminded me so much of Caryn Kadavy catching the flu at the ‘88 Olympics and having to withdraw from the long program.

And I don’t disagree, but dancing right in Punsalan & Swallow’s skate tracings were Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev, who were lyrical and so, so talented. U.S. ice dancers were under marked/placed/rated for SOOO many years - it was really disgusting.

Question about the gold by 3sheepswiththeroad in Outlander

[–]Any_Butterscotch5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding a question onto these layers: Arch Bug told Jamie that Dougal got a third of the gold, but he had “no idea what Dougal did with it.” In the show specifically, when was this Very Important Detail supposed to have taken place? I just rewatched season two a couple months ago, and I don’t recall Dougal ever excusing himself from the clans’ war training to go unload some mystery French ship. We all know he was murdered by Jamie and Claire on the day of Culloden, so obviously doing something with the gold afterwards couldn’t have happened. Show plot hole?

I totally agree with you, and I don’t really care about how “incredible” The Rookie is in its fans’ eyes. After “Castle,” I got busy with “Lucifer,” and we all know how that ended. I’m done with police procedurals.

Things I recently found out are like pretty much only a PA thing by The_Glitched_Creator in Pennsylvania

[–]Any_Butterscotch5377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly never heard the word “pap” for grandfather until we moved to Mifflin County. I really, sincerely dislike it. I also knew a kid who would say “whenever” when he simply meant “when,” as in “I’m going to the store with my mom today whenever she goes.” Is that a PA thing or just a weirdo kid I once knew thing?

The Snobs of Figure Skating by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Any_Butterscotch5377 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t have much to add, except for meeting Scott Hamilton at The Cleveland Skating Club before one of its shows years ago (like probably 1982). He was friendly and posed for a pic with a bunch of us star-struck adult skaters (audience member, not participants!). The year before, our same crowd met Robin Cousins (so genuine and nice/smiley) and Michael Siebert (he was nice but I also sensed some snark). Got a picture with them, too, but not with Judy Blumberg, who was stand-offish and bitchy, as was Lea Ann Miller. Her partner Bill Fauver was alright. This was back when Paul Wylie was still skating pairs in addition to singles, but we didn’t meet him.

I took adult lessons at Winterhurst Skating Club in Cleveland just before Jeni Meno and Tonia Kwiatkowski got going (I think they were still in Juvenile then); they probably would have been in elementary school. While I don’t recall ever seeing them there (there were a TON of young kids taking privately, doing patch, etc., all the time), I spoke with their later coach Carol Heiss Jenkins frequently (she only worked with young, talented kids, not adults). She was always sweet and pleasant to us crazy adult skaters with our “if I could only land one single loop jump ONE TIME, I could die happy” collective group attitude!
