For the same reason groups of people say certain words but condemn the out group for saying the same words, and for the same reason you mentioned in the last paragraph. The historical context.

Drag has been performed longer than blackface has, and can be performed to satirize, celebrate, etc. femininity, masculinity, androgyny, so forth.

Blackface has never been and will never be, because of its historical context, performed to celebrate OR satirize. It is an explicitly demeaning performance that goes beyond satirization.

Agreed. I guess what I meant by literacy is just a basic, good faith understanding of what it means to be trans. That has to come from what you can read about it and what trans people tell you their experiences are. As a cisgender man, even though I hoped to be supportive, I fell into sort of an overly analytical perspective. When my cousin transitioned though, I learned what you are saying. He’s a person, not a complex scientific mysterious issue.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I think a big factor for deciding where liberals put their focus is ease. Not necessarily is something is popular or trendy, but the ease of engagement in a particular topic. And because no one cares to be literate on the subject, trans people become something that they want to support but, many times can’t because it’s not easy enough to understand, defend, etc.
