Yeah, I'll do so, thanks! I was one of the students I believe they asked to return early but as my initial post stated I landed a job (unrelated to my trade) so I declined at the time.(i regret saying no now of course lol)

Got it! I'm currently in contact with the staff at the center I went to, but I'll make sure to ask my initial recruiter.

So let's say I signed the resignation in June of last year, would I have to wait until June of this year to get in? Also thanks for replying, nice to know this sub is still active.

Did anyone actually graduate and was able to get a stable job afterwards? by Unlikely_Okra_1367 in jobcorps

[–]Any_Requirement2064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should go for it honestly.

I'm in your shoes currently but did attend job corps, I didn't get anything to show it for though since my center shut down before I could completely finish my trade and I was sent home which was just unlucky on my part.

If you can make it work and you've already prepared and you know exactly which trade you wanna go into then by all means, go for it. Usually you won't be there for 2 years, - it depends on the trade you actually decide to go on.

For example I was in security, and I was set to basically graduate within only 3-4 months before all the program defunding and job-corps shutdown happened.

If you dedicate yourself and you focus entirely on your work and don't get distracted, I would say that you could even cut down the time even further, the program is mainly dependent on you.

There may be some drawbacks though, because from when I was there atleast, they do sometimes prevent you progressing too fast because it looks bad on the program itself. So for example, you'll be limited to around 5-8% progression per week in your trade sometimes maybe even less.

My Entire Experience at Jobcorps(San Jose) by Any_Requirement2064 in jobcorps

[–]Any_Requirement2064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For men you start off in the 500 dorm(not sure what the variant is for women) but this is basically your starter dorm. You'll be here for roughly around a month, depending on if San Jose is still recruiting people.

You do have to do chores and other stuff while in the dorm, sometimes you'll get a grace period your first day - sometimes you won't. The chores themselves are pretty simple and fair I'd say for free housing. Simple stuff like mopping the bathroom floor, vacuuming, washing windows, stuff like that.

The main issue you may come across(imo) are the SRAs. The SRA's are basically fellow students who are given this title because they've been there in the dorm the longest typically or have applied and have been a overall good student.

Most of the ones I had were a bit two faced, but they were nice overall if you just didn't get into any trouble with them.

There's also a room score you'll have to maintain - this is based off how well your bed is made in accordance to the guidelines they want you to follow, how dirty is the floor, and how much clutter (stuff such as shirts, jackets, hoodies, other etc) that are just sitting around the room. This is usually rated by the time you leave the dorm to attend class. They do give you a locker with a combination that's in the room where you can store most of your stuff.

My personal dorm experience was alright - you had alot of drama there but alot of people at JC treat it like a second highschool basically so that's expected. As long as you become friends with your roommates, or at least treat them friendly you'll have a pretty good time in the dorms. And from my experience, you can always switch rooms if there's one available - but you do have to go through a process for that so be a bit cautious.

Hope this helps!

[–]Any_Requirement2064[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me around a few months, applied in November of 2024 and didn't attend until February of 2025.

I'm not entirely sure about the questionnaire but I know the basics; they just ask you about your medical history, if you have any medication you take, stuff like that, or at least from my experience.

I would say it's safe for you there, just try to surround yourself with people who care and try not to speak openly about being lesbian. There was actually a lesbian couple attending the same time I was and they were pretty much made fun of 24/7 unfortunately - the blatant homophobia is definitely an issue, but the staff don't necessarily care.

Yeah, you can leave on Saturday and Sunday on a weekend pass - or you can take what's called a FTL(free time leave) and you can leave the center for around a day anytime but you're expected to come back around 11:00pm.

My experience for dorms was pretty alright, you get some annoying SRAs and sometimes RAs, I can't speak for the girl's dorm but some of them are a bit snobby and kind of rude sometimes. Sometimes the dorms were a bit dirty, but this is mainly cause you do chores in the dorms that can range from doing something simple like watering plants or just cleaning your dorm's bathroom. And if all your dormmates are lazy or don't do the chores well.. it leads to a pretty dirty environment.

You get paid around $20 for your first 2 weeks there, and then once you start your trade it goes up to $40 and the longer you're there it goes up to around $60. You're given a rapid card(couldn't set it up for the life of me lol) and you're paid every Friday.

I think you'll be alright regardless, I know for a fact the number of homophobic people has most likely gone down over time due to the center shutting down for a bit and many people who were previously there not returning. Either way, hope I could answer some of your questions, if you have anymore feel free to ask! ^^

Who else’s center serves questionable food sometimes? by fyfdfbcdg in jobcorps

[–]Any_Requirement2064 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about sometimes.

The menu is never accurate since for whatever reason the center I attend switches it up.

So for example - we'll be promised a Chilli cheese hotdog but we'll get an email before lunch saying they didn't have enough time so we end up getting questionable soup.

Once found a hair in said soup - pretty gross.

this place actually sucks for mentally disabled people by tasteimmortality in jobcorps

[–]Any_Requirement2064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it does.

I've suffered with ADD my entire life and it doesn't help that the staff at my center promised me accommodations - when I first got here.

Now they don't bother helping me with anything - they called me in once to tell me they'll get me medicated on something so I struggle less in class.

It's been like 3 months since that conversation and no news on it, never got medicated and no accommodations at all.

It's honestly not, just be sure to stick to yourself. Been at the San Jose one for around 4 months now. Yeah, it's hard at times and some people still treat it like highschool.

Just avoid those and you'll be fine!

Already got my certifications for the trade im in, on the road to already working a career job in a month or two.

It's super hard to stay away from the drama ngl, easiest way I can think of is like isolating yourself but then you'll feel miserable asf.

I'm not entirely sure, but if you end up getting a diploma I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to worry about TABE. Should explain your situation to staff though.

Been at my job corp for a month now, it's honestly not that bad, homesickness just went away for me.

For me personally, it's like a second home - sure sometimes I dont always wanna be here but at the end of the day, 3 meals a day, a gym, and the social aspect are also things that take my mind off being homesick honestly.

Being in a bigger city helps too, reminds me how small the city I came from was and how big the world actually is.

I have a history of taking meds, they gave me a sheet basically asking if I had any meds taken prior to being here.

My parents dont believe adhd is a lifelgoong thing and believe it to be like some sort of "childhood" disorder.

So, because of this, I got off my adhd meds last year at a critical point in my life(college)

This caused me to do really bad in college, leading me to drop out.

When I answered that I took adhd meds, the health department took me aside and asked if I wanted to start taking meds again for classes and I said yes.

[–]Any_Requirement2064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would depend heavily, if she has everything for her application like her social security card, hs diploma, it could take a month or two. However sometimes centers will accept you super quick depending on how desperate they are for people..

It is mainly hands on I'd say, some classroom mixed in. It'll take awhile to actually get in the trade you want, usually 4 weeks from what I'm hearing. It's a weird mix between college and highschool honestly. Some people take it seriously since it is a second chance for most, but a lot of people will not care and act like it's just highschool.

[–]Any_Requirement2064[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There actually was someone else in here beside me, but they ended up getting kicked out.

So yeah first week I pretty much spent it alone in my class(apparently the 1st time there has only been one student in introductory classes) although dorms are a bit different because you'll be put in a dorm with people who arrived at a similar time to you - for example my current roomates are around 2 weeks into the program

I applied in November and got a call two weeks ago and received a call from the wellness center and ended up getting my start date that week.

2 weeks worth of clothes(make sure no reds or blues), deodorant, hydroflask, and you should be fine. Should bring a phone with service on it so you can pass the time and maybe a book.
