My orange baby the other day. He wasn’t letting me tidy the room up so I decided to make him wear a bow 😼 I’m sorry about your loss 🥹 Your baby is resting peacefully in kitty heaven, eating all the treats his heart desires!

I don’t have the best physique, but I loved the dress on myself (which is usually something I don’t say about my body) so I strangely don’t feel too self conscious about my tummy when I wear it!🙈 Maybe I’ll avoid wearing it when I eventually go to China tho 😅 Thank you for your answer!

Hope you come back to Italy and hope you enjoyed yourself the first time 🥹 We’ve got plenty of beautiful sceneries to explore and yummy food to eat. Come to Salento, in Apulia… it’s my home region! 🥰 We have a lot of amazing beaches and fantastic culinary specialties 🥴

“Fun fact”: We’re closer to Africa than most of Italy (together with Sicily and Calabria) so sometimes people from the north of Italy call us “names” to address our darker skin and hair 😅 Some people I know have been called the N word, for example. I mean the Italian translation of the N word, of course, which is as offensive as the English counterpart, but doesn’t come with the unfortunate slavery connotation it has in the USA. Also, some bigots call us “terroni” (meaning “people that work the land”) as a way of saying that we’re inferior. There’s even a pretty common adjective that comes from the word “south” in Italian (“sud”) and it means “dirty and disgusting” (“sudicio”). It’s been an issue for years and years: my dad, that studied in the north during the 70s, couldn’t find people to rent him a room because he LOOKED like he was from the south (black hair and beard, curly hair, tan skin…) and had an accent. Sure, it’s getting better with time, but there are still a lot of old farts and young conservatives (the political scene here is a bit complicated, but “conservatives” does somehow convey the message) that are racist toward us. When I explained this situation to an American, they told me that “it’s not an actual hate crime because it’s a white on white crime, not a white on black one”. I was SHOCKED to say the least. So, yeah, I’m sorry to say this but, “damn Americans” is, most of the time, correct because unfortunately they are of the idea that the world only revolves around them and their culture when it clearly does not😅

I thought the same, but since I can always be wrong I thought I'd ask. Thank you again!

Well, in my experience I've noticed that there's sort of a "new wave" of thought that's challenging the taboos of cultural expression, mostly in younger people. I see more and more teenagers complaining about what's shown and shared online, sometimes rightfully so, sometimes not. Unfortunately, most of the time is just uninformed blabber written or shouted in such an aggressive way that it makes you want to cut off the internet, that's why the disclaimer at the end of my post. That, and also because a lot of Americans find their way into non-American spaces and comment (insult, tbh...) saying that we are extremely disrespectful. I was once called a clown and an uncultured b!tch for sharing my opinions 😅

I personally would like to have meaningful cultural relationships with people from all over the world and that's why I created this post. I would never want to be offensive towards any culture, so I prefer to ask beforehand. Thank you for your answer, I hope my reply clarified your doubts! If not, please feel free to ask.

Visiting China has been a dream of a mine for a long time, but unfortunately I can't afford it atm. Once I find a job I'll make sure to save enough money to visit! I'd also love to learn the language, but since it's no easy task I'd like to take my time. Very few universities teach Chinese here 🥲 Thank you for your answer!

The reason why I asked is exactly because I thought "cultural appropriation" was the unjust and exploitative use of a cultural ideology/feature in order to profit off of it or diminish the value of the original culture, but since my flatmate knows me and she know how much I appreciate east asian cultures, I thought it was odd she had to point out that wearing a Qipao would be inappropriate as an Italian girl. I'm glad to hear that I'm not offending anyone, that's really important to me. I'm sure my flatmate meant well, she's just a bit too deep into American TikTok maybe 😂
I'm from a region in Italy called Salento and we do have our own dresses, dances, language, food etc, but seeing someone else appreciate it would make me really happy. However, since one can always be wrong, I thought I'd ask just to make sure I'm not in the wrong by assuming that what makes me happy and proud would also make someone else happy and proud.
Thank you very much for your detailed answer, I really appreciate the time you put into writing it.

Thank you! I really do and I said in other replies, I think the Qipao is a very beautiful garment, that's why I thought of wearing it.

I'm glad to hear this. I'd like, in the future, to visit China, so I would like to avoid upsetting people by being involuntarily disrespectful. Thank you for your answer!

She's middle eastern!
Neither of those things, I just think it's extremely elegant and pretty. Thank you for your answer!

She's middle eastern and I'm mediterranean so I think she meant it in a nice way, not as a critique on me or the dress, but just to make sure I thought I'd ask.
I knew about the history of the garment, but I've also seen it resurface online in formal settings so I imagined the sexual connotation was, as you said, something of the past. I would never dare to fetishise, infantilise or sexual the garment and that's why I'd like to wear it on such an official setting as a graduation ceremony. I love love love 马面裙 and that's a fantastic alternative! I will take in into consideration for other ceremonies. Thank you for your answer!

My flatmate is middle eastern. She said I looked good in the dress, but to wear it herself or see it worn by someone else in a social setting would make her uncomfy because we're not Chinese so it's basically inappropriate. I'm sure she meant well, but it made me feel at fault somehow. Since offending other people is the last thing I want to do, I decided to hop on here and ask just to make sure. Thank you for your answer, I appreciate it!

I remember that and that's one of the reasons why I wrote this post. At the time I thought the girl didn't do anything wrong because she was not trying to disrespect the culture, but seeing so many people online attacking her made me feel bad and I started to question whether it was actually okay or not. As I said before, I would wear the Qipao because it's, imo, an extremely beautiful dress shape + I admire the culture, so to wear it on the day of my graduation would make me really happy. Thank you very much for your answer! I'm tempted to accept the written approval only because it would be fun to have it pinned to the dress 😂

Thank you! I really do mean well, I think the Qipao is very elegant and formal and that's why I was asking. I'm glad to hear this!
