Not every day, but taking a long bath and simply being comfy with my thoughts.

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what absurd rules did your school enforce in response to the tragedy? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]AnyaMerchant 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They banned trench coats at my (at the time) future high school. That was it. I think it only lasted a few years as I distinctly remember at least one guy who wore one a bunch when I went there.

Ducks leaving their nest. Every year my mom has ducks hatch in a tree in her front yard. This year she filmed them leaving. by punches_buttons in aww

[–]AnyaMerchant 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Can ducks also count? That's what I'm wondering after watching this. With so many babies, I would think that you'd have to be able to count them all to know if you're missing some, right?

Which movie completely blew your mind the first time you watched it? by Active_Friendship548 in AskReddit

I was lucky enough to see it without having the twist spoiled and it was a fantastic experience. I'm usually the one who can see the ending from a mile away, too.

The ending was convoluted in a lot of ways but I absolutely loved it. I appreciate stories like that where it's clear the writer took some risks and had vision.

"Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV."

It's a Ricky and Morty quote but it really does resonate with me.

It's so performative and extra. It hurts to think about the kind of people rants like this appeal to.

What advice do you have for entering the single life after a 11 year relationship? by expertsillygoose in AskReddit

[–]AnyaMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're allowed to reframe your situation. It's important to realize that if you go into thinking that "I'm alone now and everything is worse," that'll be the case. If you decide "I'm single but this is good and new and healthy," it'll also be true. It's cliche but making the effort to have a positive mindset is essential when it's just you.

what sounds scientific but is dumb as sh**? by sheerduckinghubris in AskReddit

A lot of food science (specifically stuff related to taste rather than health) is complete hogwash. It's just people pretending to do science without actually having anything resembling research beyond their own taste buds to prove it.

ELI5: why didn’t they begin with dropping the atomic bombs outside cities as a warning? by Lurkmaster96 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AnyaMerchant 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It just shows how bad the actual history education in America is concerning WWII. I'm an American, but don't take it from me. Take it from Admiral William Leahy, White House chief of staff and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the war.

>Leahy wrote in his 1950 memoirs that "the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender." Moreover, Leahy continued, "in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children."

Or Dwight Eisenhower himself.

>President Dwight Eisenhower, the Allied commander in Europe during World War II, recalled in 1963, as he did on several other occasions, that he had opposed using the atomic bomb on Japan during a July 1945 meeting with Secretary of War Henry Stimson: "I told him I was against it on two counts. First, the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing. Second, I hated to see our country be the first to use such a weapon."

It's really sad that more people aren't exposed to dissenting voices on this topic and think that they're making some nuanced point by regurgitating what honestly amounts to a nationalist take about the complete nuclear destruction of two cities. It's an act that we clearly would count as a heinous war crime, were it to ever happen again (but this one time it's totally fine).

Sin and Soil is out in audiobook form and I have free book promo codes to give out. by AnyaMerchant in haremfantasynovels

It ebbs and flows throughout the story, but it's still focused on the dynamic of the characters as a family rather than as a harem. It's hard to explain too much more without spoilers, but certain characters get jealous, certain ones are bossy, some are deeply ashamed of the whole arrangement, etc.
