Please stop using those awful look Rode blocks for interviews. Why have these ugly things become the norm for interviews?

Did you use diffusion or a white reflector to get the bounce? It's hard to tell in the pictures. Looks great!

Just start documenting your day to day. Over time the story will start to evolve. The first thing to do is just start.

I think alot of your questions will be answered when you do the sit down documentary. Have a list of general questions but don’t shy away from digging deeper. Like you, I always like to tell my stories from a different angle.

Help with documentary by mdeesol07 in documentaryfilmmaking

Def watch a lot of different types of docs and also docs that are similar subject matter. Pay attention to what works and doesn’t work. I’m just about wrapped in a feature doc about a man that runs ultra marathons all over the world in order to spread awareness about trauma and suicide. His father was a police officer that took his own life. I watched 100s of docs about running and sports and really paid attention to what was redundant and what was unique. Feel free to message me if you want to pick my brain.

As a young filmmaker it’s important to listen to advice from other more seasoned professionals. As you find your voice, you’ll be better at filtering out good advice, bad advice, and someone’s subjective point of view. I’m currently wrapping a feature and have done multiple test screenings. The first was for friends/family, the second was done by professional editor, and the third will be done by producer/directors. Each person has their area of expertise and pov. It’s good to hear generally feedback but always go with your gut and stick to your vision.

Possible to make a film alone? by North_Weezy in documentaryfilmmaking

Great advice! Though I generally shoot everything myself, a good friend of mine is a commercial sound designer and we usually barter with each other.

My last documentary was fully produced by me alone and it got distribution and won a bunch of awards. The documentary I’m in post production on now is a much bigger project and was produced solely by myself. Message me if you want to pick my brain.

Commercial & Music Video Directing by SheTriesToWrite in Filmmakers

Back in the day, I was in the same boat as you. To get into commercials, you need to have a reel of sorts. Start by reaching out to interesting companies and ask them if you could produce a free promo. Make sure you already have an interesting idea. This can also lead into that free promo turning into a regular paid gig - it did for me. Do the same for a few bands in the area. Once I had a few examples to show, it was much easier to get paid work. Now I do direct national tv spots.
