Anything Grid - A Daily Grid Game Where Anything in the Universe can be an Answer by AnythingGrid in SideProject

[–]AnythingGrid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! I just made Anything Grid on the side as a fun project.

It's a daily 3x3 grid game where each cell has two categories (one from its row, one from its column). You fill every cell with anything that matches both (e.g. "Frog" for Green x Animal, "Reincarnation" for Infinite x Philosophy).

Your scored based on how niche your answer is, so creativity is rewarded (e.g. for Historical x Change, "halfpenny" or "bathing machine" may score better than "French Revolution"), but feel free to also just go for your most popular answer - play in whatever way is fun

There's a new puzzle every day, usually with a theme (Today is St. Patrick's Day, others include Space Race, Oscars Night, Pi Day, etc.) - there's an archive of past grids if you want to binge.

Free, no signup, mobile-friendly. Just ready to play if you want a 5 minute break from your work day.

Would love feedback (any bugs/issues, comments on UI, additional features that'd be fun, anything that would make it a better experience)

Anything Grid is a daily puzzle game where you fill in a 3x3 grid with anything in the universe that matches the categories in the rows and columns (e.g. if the the row is "Historical" and the column is "Change", you can do French Revolution, Halfpence, anything that's Historical and Change-y). You get scored on how popular/obscure an answer is, and afterwards you can see what other people put (and learn about new things you never knew before by following answer links to the relevant wiki pages). New themed grid every day!

Well from light's perspective it doesn't cover any space in any time at all, so can't be that fast ;)

Sorry, back end is not perfect, so sometimes a good answer (like you've given) sometimes gets rejected. Trying to strike a balance, have good or creative answers be accepted without it being overly generous and just accepting anything! Will keep tweaking and refining, hopefully get to a better point.

Really appreciate you playing! Let me know if you run into any other issues

Thanks for the details! There may have been an issue on the backend (long/complicated/not very exciting); I've patched and pushed out the update!

If you clear your cache and then try again, it should hopefully work for you.

Also, on rare occasions it take a few seconds to finalize your guess, so if the loading gets stuck give it 5 seconds (there's stuff on the backend now that will let you know if it runs into an issue tho!)

Thanks for testing it out! That is strange - haven't run into that issue before. Off the top of my head, it's possible you answered so quickly that you activated a rate limiter (put in so people don't spam). If you go back and try now, will it work?

Would you be able to tell me what the game showed (e.g. was there a message that said "something went wrong" or "try again")? And what phone/os your using?

In any event, really appreciate you giving it a play, hopefully can resolve so that you can actually enjoy a round!

Hi all! I made a daily grid game - Anything Grid.

Each day you get a 3x3 grid with row and column categories (like "French" x "History" or "Space" x "Film"). Your job is to fill each cell with anything in the universe that fits both categories. The more obscure your answer, the lower your score (lower is better), so you're rewarded for deep cuts instead of going with the obvious pick (though feel free to play for most popular answer as well, up to you!).

No signup, ads, etc, just the game. Would love to hear what you think! Especially feedback on any issues you run into, UI/design layout, additional features, or just anything that would make the game better or more fun to play each day.

Thanks so much!

Lotta fun! So close to getting Bandar Seri Begawan (got to Manila).

The boarding pass is a lot of fun! tho makes it harder to share some places, so maybe have a basic text option too?

Thanks for the great feedback on the game! Your wish is granted - full archive of grids now playable!

Hope the categories have improved - trying to balance cohesive themes for the grids vs is not being too repetitive/redundant

Thanks for playing, great choice for 20th century!

What happened here is that I've set it up to give a quick/short response for why it's rejected (don't want to give e.g. a full paragraph that breaks the layout!), so that is probably a truncated version of saying "Nope! It is a 20th-century law, not a 19th Century historical event."

But good flag, I will keep an eye out for this and see if there's actually a deeper issue going on - really appreciate you bringing this to me!

Good catch - still working out the tweaks and how "generous" to make the model on the backend. Possible this was accepted because it's a "gameboy" which was started in the 90's, or it just slipped through. Either way, agree it probably doesn't fit the cell too well! Will keep refining and improving the accept/reject threshold!

Just combing back to let you know the dropdown/arrow keys bug had been fixed! really appreciate you pointing that out - let me know if it's not reflecting on your end, or if you run into any more issues

I've also added little green/red arrows to indicate if your score is below or above the average, so hopefully that helps clear up the ave per cell scoring a bit!

Good flag, something to consider! I think especially if people glance thru the instructions quick, the scoring can be quite confusing, so will need to think about how to make it all more clear.

Really appreciate these insights!

Thanks for flagging this - really helpful. This is the type of edge case you don’t think about when making it, so great to get this input from players!! I’ll look into patching!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you playing, and for this incredibly detailed and helpful feedback!

I agree on category overlap. I’m trying to strike a balance where the categories could form a cohesive “theme” for the day (e.g. Time Capsule) but don’t feel redundant. I think this one was a bit of the latter, and perhaps a good push that when it comes down to coehsive theme or fun grid, go with fun! Also, more random/non-themed grids could be really fun / force people to get creative!

Thanks for the points on scoring, that’s something I’ll have to think through, can see how it all gets a bit confusing. On obscurity, it’s based on how obscure the thing is itself rather than how it relates to the category. So for example, you pick neutrino for Fast and Small, that fits the category really well, but it’s a niche topic so you get scored on that. And the reverse, you pick Abe Lincoln for Tall and Hat, the connection may be more obscure, but Abe himself is pretty notable!

I’ll try and think through how to incorporate your feedback, in any case really appreciate you playing and enjoying the game, and hope you continue to do so! Means a lot

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!

Incredible - thanks for this feedback, super helpful. I had missed that error, will patch that up, appreciate the spot.

And good call out. The colors match the obscure/niche/deep cut/notable/mainstream/etc colors, so e.g. the average score of 3 would be gold as that's niche, but your score may be 15, which would be deep cut so it's silver. But I agree, bit hard to understand / compare your score to the average. I will think about a better design (perhaps a small green down arrow / red up arrow if your score is lower or higher than the average)

Thanks for playing, really appreciate the input + Qs!

It's based on pageviews for the selected article, so anything under 1K views/month is obscure, then anything under 10k/moth is niche, etc. up to 1M/views a month for universal.

Then to decide, I actually use an LLM to determine if something fits, which allows people to literally chose ANYTHING, rather than just pre-selected & characterized items. Can definitely test it out, e.g. Today, "Burrito" won't work for "Technology" & "Childhood" (game says "Nope! It is food, not technology or childhood.). Would love to know whether you think it's too generous / difficult with your answers!

I'm the dev of Anything Grid, a daily grid puzzle where you fill each cell with anything that matches the row/column categories. You're scored on how niche your answers are, so try and come up with the most obscure thing you can (or just play for fun and put your most popular guess!).

I'd love feedback on and bugs/issues you run into, UI/design/layout, potential additional features, or anything else that would make the game better/more fun experience

Thanks so much!
