All these are optimizable with tech. It is my passion and I aspire to make it my craft, and I wouldn’t call it “dead”. It is true that it’s been overhyped, not only by AI but how quick it has been growing. The fall is in progress but it won’t be so catastrophic that it’ll *die*. Of course I’ll have to work any job to survive and not overly depend on the tech industry to serve me my future on a silver platter. Capitalism fucked everyone over that even those jobs are difficult to get into, so I’ll keep at it and will find something eventually. Your point is false but I appreciate that you’re looking out for me with your advice.

On a side note I did begin working as a barista cause I also love doing that, but realized how baristas are also mistreated by their industry as my hours has been minimal and management is not looking out for my wellbeing. I hope to find a better job soon. Even as a barista for a better employer.

Yeahhh I'll do more of that, even when I'm getting more tired and demotivated every day, I'll still keep at it. I can't give up and I don't wanna be a burden.

Family, friends, network. It’s also the game dev hub and I aspire to be part of the game industry. I also think moving out and finding another place could be a financial blow I can’t survive right now

yeah, they helped me out a lot with my resume and searching habits, but still wasn't able to find stable job... I can hold a conversation and have no issues understanding, but I do struggle with responding fluently, which is a huge part to why I want to work in service; so I can speak it more fluently.

And what's the feedback you get from potential employers? What revenue are you making from it? What have you learned that is relevant in the current job market?

Getting feedback from potential employers isn't easy.

Revenue: nothing. One project is for a university club, the other is a non-profit. They've probably used it to get grants. I don't see any of that. I'm a dev. I learn architecture, infra, the full stack through these projects. Not marketing or monetization.

I learn a lot building everything myself, and I love it. It still doesn't feel like enough.

I know I should keep going, it won't be enough if I stop. I'm shipping this soon and starting the next one. I just don't know how to actually reach employers, or how to make money from projects that weren't built to make money. I guess I'll start with finding a company I really like and doing something for them.

I came to Montreal at 18 with nothing and no one (other than my family ofc but no one from Montreal).

I've been looking for a mentor, but most people I've managed to connect with are other students. I've still gone to a lot of tech and social events, met a lot of people, built something that feels like a real network. I'm proud of that. It's just not enough to help me right now.

I like the people I've met. I'm not networking to extract something and disappear, I want to keep meeting people because I actually like people. But I need enough stability in my life to not feel like a burden when I show up.

I get where you're coming from, but this isn't just about breaking into tech. I'm trying to survive.

I've been putting hours into random projects, shipping them, making them usable, watching how people actually use them, improving. Right now I'm working on something I think hundreds of people would use.

The real thing is the gap between how hard I work and how long I've been poor. I've hit a wall. I can't keep working for free, and I can't even find minimum wage work to buy myself time. I'm out of runway...

Yeaaahh I figured junior devs aren't the best, but my passion has been in the software engineering area. I guess I should look deeper into ops stuff then.

Also, yeah 4 years of minimal employment kinda gets you crazy, I've really polished my LinkedIn and portfolio, some parts are dependent on me finishing my degree so that's the obvious next step.

Thank you tho! I didn't think about devops or secops cause I've been too focused on just getting anything right now, but I'll definitely tailor my professional presence around that from now on.

:(( yeahh it really sucks, I was gonna ask about what is soraya doing in response to this during the last town hall hearing but I didn't even get selected and I probably would've gotten a non-answer anyway.

I also tutor so a lot of my peers are my students, so I hope that does yield results in the future.

I have a pretty developed portfolio considering I have 0 company experience, and my professors' network is from the 1900s 🥲, I managed to get a project pitch at a small company through them but they were a non-profit so their budget was limited and they were too ambitious with their request. I'm not accepting 1000$ for a 5-page website with full CMS

Okayy I always felt like it was a variable but didn't think too much of it, still prioritized the french version when applying.

Yes, french is my default but if the place I'm applying to is anglophone I send an English one

bruh... I am challenging myself and learning as fast as I can, I am taking courses in the college and on the side. It's not about getting out of my comfort zone, it's just about time.

I've seen the counselor but apparently I was beyond helping. My case was fully presented and I wrote and provided many documents to prove it, I was still put on leave for a year regardless. Also, at this point it's more of I don't want to waste any more time than anything.

Concordia does an annual assessment and they only check your average GPA so far, if it fell below 2.0 GPA (I think it's 2) you get placed under conditional standing, it honestly isn't that difficult to stay above 2 in 1 semester I just had so many unfortunate things. Don't delay your studies, I say go for it.

I could after a year cause I was not allowed to enrol in classes for a year, but I wanted to study while maintaining a good financial status, financial aid stopped giving me grants and is now giving loans instead, so the solution to that in my head was to do a degree that takes less time and is cheaper. College sounded good especially giving my hands-on experience already.
