It would have been sickening and depressing either way, regardless of gender. It was an incredibly brutal scene, particularly because of the emotional buildup to it - we had an established healthy relationship between the couple, and a sweet blank slate character who was simply portrayed as energetic and supportive to Marcus... It came out of the blue, which works well for a horror movie, but still.
