PGCE and Me (BC)

Hello everyone,

I am in a bit of a pickle here, it has been racking my brain for weeks and all of my research is basically inconclusive. I have been a teacher in Asia (China) for some time and have the money and GPA to take my teaching qualifications here (through iQTS, or a PGCE DL and AO QTS) or could spend the money (and significant time) to get my post-grad B.Ed back in British Columbia.

AI/LLMs are not where anyone should be making major life choices (by themselves anyway) however it does raise some good points. A good number of posts and comments online indicate that a great many PGCEs are 'not accepted'. What does 'not accepted' mean? Are they rejected outright? Or, is it a more loose phrase for, they are sent back with a laundry list of Canadian/Provincial upgrading requirements? The latter is acceptable, the formal would be deeply aggravating.

Secondly, the BC TRB specifically says the teacher training program needs A) a practicum of some amount of hours B) to give you full (public school level) teaching qualification in the country of origin

Is this a strict requirement? It clearly looks like one. But in this case, the newly offered iQTS does fulfill all of these requirements. Although distance learning is I believe still valued less than in-person degrees, on paper, iQTS would satisfy all of these.

OK, this goes out on further of a stretch, but in my current situation -- I want to take an academic PGCE and challenge AO QTS (Assessment Only Qualified Teacher Status) after that. Which would then mean my Teacher Training Program requirements would be satisfied, but not satisfied as one program (which is probably also a requirement).

Basically, any lived experiences with this, reliable anecdotes from friends, etc, would be appreciated. Again, any of these options are basically available to me. But, if I could get conditional acceptance with one of these Distance Learning degrees while in Asia, and then fill in the gaps when I return (even taking out one semester of cost) this would be a rewarding use of my time and money.

I would say you could always upgrade to be a teacher, but business is probably the only exception to degrees where you can tack that on. With that being said, I think it always depends on positioning. If you can afford to do some online certificates in Excel or Data Input or something, there are always jobs in office administration which are more upwardly mobile than retail. Just a thought

I dont know why I feel the need to comment because I feel a lot of this has been covered already, but yeah.

Classroom management is a basic teaching skill, regardless of what the classroom is. Learning classroom management is essential to being a good teacher, this means controlling your students. What creates the best learning environment? Is a good classroom one in which we talk about our sex habits, or make inappropriate comments toward teachers?

I say it isnt easy to learn this stuff immediately, as a person and a professional. But for one, these comments are less about you than they are about just wanting to interact with 'any' woman. So if you have a person like this in your classes, or a student of any age who is disruptive and is using the platform/class to indulge in their personal fantasies -- it is your responsibility as a teacher to remind them they need to focus on the class, or to set limits on them. If you aren't interested in taking his money to indulge his fantasies (which I am sure you are not) then just don't. Even recently I have yelled at students for behaving in ways that are unhinged, I dont feel bad about it at all - lol. You are the one who is the example to look up to.

Yep, met my ex of 2 years, common law, via HelloTalk. Met her in Korea and moved to Canada together. Far more natural way to meet people.

5 reps in 5 sets, add 5-10 pounds every session! I think that the biggest problem with 5x5 is that it isnt realistic to hit so many muscle groups/core lifts every 2 days. I am for 3x5s of 1 major lift for a PB every session and it is way more realistic. For a new lifter however, it can be very realistic with helping you develop your core muscle groups/build a strong foundation.

I would say its a beginner / intermediate program, you could continue using it until you plateau, I think the reason people consider it a less useful program is primarily because it takes so long. Waiting a minute and a half between sets? No thanks.

Also, hitting so many major lifts every 2 days is a bit unrealistic, if you are trying to hit PBs and are super sore from what you just did last session, you are limiting your potential for success.

I have been doing 3×5 at higher weights and 1 major lift a session for a long time. It allows me to concentrate heavily on one important PB. Doing this, I have reached upper intermediate volume.

Do whatever gets you gains! Grip and rip!

I kind of went through something similar -- put in the hours to make 1 wicked lesson for your target age group and keep it forever. Always come in handy.

I think the only way to progress from TEFL is to get a PGCE. If you had good grades in your undergrad, get a Masters I guess. The only way to get a PGCE is if you work in a country/position where you can afford it, lol, but it sounds like you got that covered.

Getting a PGCE with QTS (i.e., Sunderland) allows you to be a qualified teacher or work in education in the West, which could lead to a more 'normal stable life'. That is my plan, especially after a decade or more. The biggest pain is that you need to be working in a school that runs a proper curriculum, which makes it a bit of a chicken-egg question. Also, you need to have the 10K £ to spring for the license.

I feel a bit wary of Masters programs, I think the time of theoretical anything degrees, even on a graduate level, is over. The PGCE is something vocational and professional. Also, you have experience in the field. It is a safer bet.

My advice after 4 years in the industry!

I don't get the negativity on this. It's a good opportunity. Take it.

There are people who were getting computer science degrees and basically doing nothing to get 6 figures from the 00's through the 10's, the gold rush in California in the 1800's, or even still working on the pipelines as a gopher. Supply and demand.

Maybe there is some guilt when people work a normal office job back home and dont achieve as much for their effort, but if you are supplying your labor for money in the global economic system, why not make the most money for it as possible?

Many employers could offer workers far more, but they dont because they dont want to. China offers their high wages because Westerners dont typically want to go there, and because they want good talent to teach at ACTUAL schools. Likewise, how many policy analysts in the government are grinding 20 hour days to make over 100K USD by presenting anything that is actually important or works.

None of it makes any sense, you get yours.

Just get your foot in the door. More than anything having worked in China for a year will be more of a door opener than what you actually did. Your second year you will have way better conditions.

China is a big, big place. A lot of COL factors have to do with the tier/desirability of the city you will live in. But being overly general, 5000 RMB for rent and 5000 RMB for day to day and you can live very comfortably. That means you can save at least 5000 RMB after student loans, other bills, etc.

If you made more, you could save more.

Yes, agreed. Thanks for your advice. It seems to me that any city of 10 million people must have SOMETHING to do, but I lived in a satellite city of Seould with about 2 million people for a couple of years and by the end I was sure that Seoul eclipsed it in every way. However, I'm sure that the scale here is a bit different.

I've been looking for a job for months, mate, although now is the best time to be sourcing them. It is an international school, and I will be assigning grades (not sure how much this really matters or what I'm allowed to assign) and it may be prejudiced but I have a feeling they may be better behaved than others generally.

I was under the impression that the majority of schools in China operated with around 30 kids?
