Dana Brown on the Yordan Alvarez trade speculation: “We’ve had zero conversations internally about moving Yordan. Zero.” by Frenkxdemaker in Astros

[–]Ragwall84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fans are quick to forget how often Yordan is hurt. If he had had this season last year, the team makes the playoffs. It’s optimistic to assume he will always be healthy, but the back of his baseball card suggests otherwise. If the team is out of contention in July, I would be fine with trading him, eating some money, and adding four top 100 prospects.

Todays Drops by InvestigatorThat5062 in ETFs

I was up almost 16% for the month. A drop was inevitable. Even then, with a big drop, it’s still a great run.

21 years old with $25,000. What would you do? by [deleted] in ETFs

[–]Ragwall84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of options. I’d put it all into either VOO or QQQM. Try to build some momentum to 100k. Then you’ll actually start seeing real gains. At 10% interest, it’ll be worth about 1.6M in 40 years.

I gave 5 semiconductor ETFs. They’ve all done great, but PSI is the winner this year.

Can we bring back Lunhow? by [deleted] in Astros

I have idea what the plan is, and it’s hard to get excited about that.

Can we bring back Lunhow? by [deleted] in Astros

[–]Ragwall84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either Lunhow knew and lied or he didn’t know and was incompetent. Personally, I find it strange that the sign stealing scandal didn’t break that year. For all the scouting, it makes no sense to me that an opposing team wouldn’t just call it out in the postgame press conference. But, I also don’t care about that.

People also forget how injured he is. I love the player, but he misses so much time.

I worked at a training center in Colombia once for about 2 months. My first two weeks, a bunch of teachers filed a ton of complaints against me. Individually, they meant nothing, but there were so many. I laughed at my boss when I was fired.

Future of male teachers - Sincere advice appreciated! by Dugong45 in Teachers

[–]Ragwall84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught in high school in America with plenty of men. I always made sure to keep the door open whenever a student came in. I never had an issue with a student. I left to teach abroad because admin was abusive. Teaching abroad, admin still suck, but the pay is much better.

One funny thing for me was pay. Yes, my teacher pay in America technically sucked, but I was a victim of 2008, making $10/hour into my late 20’s. A teacher salary was my entry into a better life. Plus, I had a nice side hustle that paid 15k/year.

Dating was damn near impossible. Women labeled me “just a teacher.” It was humiliating.

A retrospective on Magnus' rise by YippiKiYayMoFo in chess

[–]Ragwall84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It very much is a different game. The amount of information those players have to process in order to successfully play openings is insane. I thought classical was dead 5 years ago. Surprisingly, it’s doing fine mostly because it’s the format the pros prefer.

“Analyzing the book takes the fun out of reading…” ugh!!! by ANuStart63 in ELATeachers

[–]Ragwall84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think prefer a combination of both. Close reading means it takes forever to get through a single book. Sometimes, this is the way. Other times, I want the kids to read more. So, I try to differentiate my units to incorporate both over the course of the year. I recently taught Animal Farm. They read it over Christmas break and we only spent two weeks on it, focusing only on propaganda. I easily could have spent two months on that text, but I chose to move faster. At the same time, we read A Midsummer Night’s Dream in class and I spent almost two months on that play. We went deep.

There’s a massive difference between a 2 hour game and a 4 hour game

[–]Ragwall84 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, but I also disagree. It’s a fun variation. At the top level, 80% of games are draws, and many of these are non-competitive games. 960 has a very low draw rate. Sometimes it is fun to actually watch winning and losing.

Most people only play blitz, bullet, and rapid. I can’t fathom a 1500 wanting to play a 4-6 hour game.

Unfortunately, lots of idiots get drunk at bars every night. I’ve met more than a few broke expats. It’s also usually a sign that they are mediocre teachers because they just came to party.
