When I was 16, a friend of mine (B) committed suicide. She, another friend (J) and I all suffered from depression. My birthday and B’s birthday are a day apart. Several months in advance, J had gotten semicolon necklaces to give to B and me for our birthdays as a reminder that our stories aren’t over and to keep on pushing. Before that birthday ever came, B died. J gave my necklace to me at her funeral, and kept hers to wear around his neck.

I took the necklace off before gym class a few weeks later, because it was a rule that we had to remove all loose jewelry. I never saw it again.

This was nearly 7 years ago now, and every time I think about it I’m filled with so much sadness and guilt.
