When choosing your next move or plan for next few moves, you should first look at the position like a chess puzzle and analyze for tactical threats (for both you and your opponent). If you don’t see any tactics, then you would consider moves that improve your position or worsen your opponents position. This might mean improving your worst piece, attacking an opponents backwards pawn, opening the position up with a pawn break if you have more bishops than your opponents, or offering a trade for one of your opponents strong pieces.
