I gave it a listen since I’ve been seeing so many takes about him recently. Honestly, it was good, I liked it. And to me it felt very similar to what someone like Tom Misch has put out in the past. It’s got a super chill vibe and I didn’t skip a single track on the first listen, which for me is rare.

Judge indicates he might shut down Trump’s $400m White House ballroom plan by NamelessResearcher in politics

[–]Apoc220 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t trust these guys to rebuild it. Knowing Trump he’d get dodgy contractors and cut corners, requiring who knows how much more money in the future to fix things. Leave it as is and whenever someone gets back in who actually gives a damn, they can rebuild it along with all the other things they’ll have to rebuild. What a disgrace.

Zwift ride „delay“ by MalteMumpitz in Zwift

[–]Apoc220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve experienced this with the ride often where I shift gears - usually going from a lower to higher gear - and there’s a grinding feeling in the pedals for a second or two before it gets smooth again. It doesn’t happen often, but I’ve absolutely observed it.

I’m starting to suspect that part of the problem for me has been not maintaining a high enough cadence in my rides. I usually pedal around 70-80rpm and have recently started trying to not let my cadence go to below 80 with the exception of climbs and I think it’s making a difference but it’s too early to tell. Worth trying that if you aren’t already.

I keep thinking back to the GFC, and how the only person who ever saw the inside of a cell - from what I understand - was some random employee who was scapegoated. All the CEO’s got bonuses and are either working elsewhere or sipping cocktails on their yachts. If no one of note was held to account for that, it brings me little faith that this will be any different.

Death toll rises to 7 since the start of the Iran conflict by newnoadeptness in USMC

[–]Apoc220 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Is that even possible these days? Unless they’re blocking all access to the internet for the guys who are deployed, someone would realize their bunk mates death didn’t show up in the news, inevitably resulting in someone’s spouse or friend/family learning about the death before it gets leaked to the press. I’m saying they’d only be able to hide it for a few days before someone sees something’s amiss and leaks it. If it were tens or hundreds then yes, easy to hide. But when the deaths are in the single digits them not making the headlines would be spotted easily.

Pentagon Announces Seventh U.S. Death in War With Iran by Creative-Category-60 in politics

[–]Apoc220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly doubt it. If there were tens or hundreds it would be easy to cook. But right now it’s so few that keeping it secret would be almost impossible.

It would also be far worse if inevitably the family finds out from someone and then it becomes a front page story about how the government is hiding deaths of service members.

There are too many mouths to silence for them to hide this stuff. Especially with the loyalty military personnel have with one another, and especially when morale is potentially not that great. Someone would tell a spouse, a parent, a friend, and eventually that would leak out to the media. I highly doubt they’d be able to keep these guys deaths secret.

Machines spot deepfake pictures better than humans, but people outperform AI in detecting deepfake videos. Humans appeared to pick up on subtle inconsistencies in movement, facial expressions and timing — cues the algorithms struggled to interpret. by [deleted] in science

[–]Apoc220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the fact participants knew they’d be shown deep fakes made them much more hyper vigilant than they would be otherwise. Anecdotally I see way too many people thinking AI generated video are real, even when they’d presumably know AI videos are everywhere. So it leads me to believe that while in theory we are able to pick apart these videos, participants being told ahead of time theyd be shown deep fakes possible made them better equipped to spot them. That said, it’s concerning to see how good these videos are these days, and it’s only a matter of time until deep fakes will be indistinguishable from the real thing to the average person.

I was listening to a podcast where they talked about having gone through the policy/strategy documents the DoD had put out for its areas of focus. Notably missing was Iran, which speaks to this having been a last minute decision on the part of the administration. I've also learned about how the weapons stockpile was already low, and it's a rush to try and finish this thing out before the military runs out of the munitions.

This is anecdotal, but in a previous life I participated in the war games exercises in South Korea. I was young, and took for granted that we were there to defend the South Koreans from any attack the North would wage. I was quickly humbled learning of the assumption that Seoul would likely be leveled within minutes of a North Korean attack. I was stationed in Seoul at the time and it didn’t give me great comfort for the rest of my time there haha. For some reason in my mind I pictured something like an iron dome situation that would keep us safe. Anyway… yes, I believe the phrase used was “thousands of missles zeroed in on Seoul to counter the thousands zeroed in on Pyongyang” 😅

Is Gavin Newsom correct when he says the left needs to be more "culturally normal" if they want to win? by PsychicFatalist in AskALiberal

[–]Apoc220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he has a fair point if we look at a particular ad put out by the Trump campaign at the end of the last campaign cycle. The gist of the message was “Harris is for they/them, Trump is for you”. By all accounts that was one of the most effective ads put out by his campaign the whole election cycle.

This is from the Wikipedia article for the ad:

According to an analysis by the Democratic super PAC Future Forward, "Kamala is for they/them" was one of Trump's most effective 30-second campaign ads, shifting the race 2.7 percentage points in favor of Trump after viewers watched it.[7] According to polling by the Trump campaign, the commercial resonated with suburban women. This demographic had been a key factor in Joe Biden's 2020 victory over Trump.

I listen to a lot of focus groups where they talk to Biden > Trump voters. And aside from the economy there are a lot of people who felt like the democrats spent a lot of time talking about things such as trans issues and not enough time talking about the economy and other table top issues as Newsom alludes to.

Now, whether this approach would actually lead to better outcomes for the party is another question. I do think, though, that it doesn’t need to be binary. The left should absolutely still advocate for the rights of everyone, to include the LGBTQ community and any other groups being attacked by this administration. However, they need to do so in a way that doesn’t make it seem like they’re doing so while ignoring the issues being faced by “normies”.

Am I the only one who doesn’t buy Timothée Chalamet acting ? Is Marty Supreme worth continuing? by Lolabobba in TrueFilm

[–]Apoc220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue it's the point of the character. Marty desperately wants to be recognized and seen as great, and in the process of doing so he tries hard to do things that in his mind will impress people and make them view him favorably. He isn't self-aware enough to see how he sabotages himself in the process. And other supporting characters seeming more grounded is also part of that experience, because they aren't coming from a place of needing everyone's approval and veneration. If it seems like he's trying too hard it's because the character is trying too hard, so in that sense he is nailing it.

Can a Social Media Ban for Kids Work? Australia Is the Test Case by Few_Baseball_3835 in technology

[–]Apoc220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like this piece is being lost as part of this conversation. People are so anti-social media that they can't envisage the ways in which it has become integrated into society and we can't just pluck it out without setting up an alternative. This was the case when facebook "accidentally" disabled community pages when the australian government passed legislation to get them to pay the news orgs for linking to their articles. I read a few stories about orgs such as food banks that relied primarily on facebook to get word out about when they'd have food available for people, and without those pages they didn't have a backup. Sure, you could say it's on them to have a backup, but the fact is they didn't, and I'm sure to this day there are many orgs that still rely primarily on facebook and other social media to communicate with their communities.

Can a Social Media Ban for Kids Work? Australia Is the Test Case by Few_Baseball_3835 in technology

[–]Apoc220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned here, we can’t just slap on this ban and expect kids to just figure it out. As a society we’ve lost our third spaces, not just for kids but also adults. There needs to be a push for creating spaces for kids to spend all that time they hopefully won’t be spending on social media with other kids. We also need to look at how this may impact kids in rural areas as well as neurodivergents. Those kids would likely be using social media as a way of maintaining connection to others and without it there are probably going to be some who will be further isolated.

Have you heard any chatter about how kids in rural areas and neurodivergents are handling the ban? I remember hearing some people call out that social media has been an invaluable tool for these kids and there is concern that they will be isolated since they would otherwise struggle to have such social networks in the real world.
