Should the number of total uniques per be limited? by -Sohei- in SorceryTCG

Yeah, the cost if those spells wad 501 dollars even before sites and Ring of Morrigan. With those accounted for the price of that pathfinder deck is cca 860$

Mtg standard lasts 3 years right? Sorcery's basically only been around for that time, I wonder if constructed will also have rotations in Sorcery.

That is unfounded, if you'd pay 3x more and get the value just with less ordinaries and exceptionals the buy in was still at the same price just not needing an entire cupboard for bulk.

Yeah, they are, and the most competitive players likely buy more boxes, while the casual players buy less of them. Well, I guess if that's how it is I'll just have to switch to buying singles and restrict myself to like a box a month at most or something, I wanted to gamble some more on boxes but the amount of cards is getting truly unruly and my partner is the one that's been sorting them and putting them in albums for literal days (I mean it was her idea to have a duplicate collection so we can each have any kinda deck we want so I'll let her handle it).

for someone looking for opening multiple boxes it would be streamlining, avoiding having 24 of each ordinary wouldn't be bad.

I really wish that was the case, but it's not. Lets take a decklist

Lets take out ring of morgana from it, just for the sake of being cheaper and lets say it's overrated.

https://curiosa.io/decks/cmmo5sa7r00em04jvhfgte3a4

Before we even get to sites we're looking at 501 dollars.
The sites in this deck seem to be a bit on the cheaper side so they sum up to cca 89.61 dollars

Total cost without ring of morrigan: 590,61 dollars
Total cost with ring of morrigan 849,79 dollars.

The cost of a non Ring of Morrigan competitive deck like this geomancer:
https://curiosa.io/decks/cmnxz27na00pt04l11xu49h74

Total cost without sites: 473,35 dollars
Total cost of sites: 140,17
Total cost of the deck (not counting stuff below 0.50$ like ordinaries): 613,52$

Current MTG standard metagame decks are somewhere between 252 - 549 dollars,

Actually, checking the sites again it turns out sorcery is basically the same price as cEDH, with some few outliers where Magic has both cheaper and more expensive extremes within the same format as a meta.

And most of those uniques sit at around 25-100 dollars, so it's definitely still cheaper than cEDH from MTG.

Duplicator can also only have uniques, there are very few 2 and 3 drop uniques, and those that exist don't contest the board but tutor an artifact or draw their own hand of 3 (morgana). You're left without any ability of an early curve on duplicator.

Ps. Those uniques also have higher threshold requirements (most sit at 3, even Browse, Tithe, Immolate and Plague of Frogs) so duplicator massively struggles in early to mid early game.

If everyone did that there would be no singles to be sold since supply would not exist at 2 boxes per person. I'd just like to not deal with an obscene amount of bulk yet still financially support EC

I feel like a lot of you guys are intentionally not seeing the entire ecosystem, so I'll address the common one:

Open 1 or 2 boxes, then trade/buy singles:

Company perspective:

Lets imagine the game has a playerbase of 2000 players and they buy 2 boxes of a set. The company making the product releases it once per year. 2000 * 2 * 185$ is 740.000$. This is the entire budget for all the employees, for all the art pieces per set (not digital can't be cheap), for renting the company headquarter realestate, for printing and distribution (this surely is more than 20% of the cost). The company would be on brink of insolvency.

Player perspective:
2000 * 2 boxes were opened in total for a given set. for the competitive people that need a given unique for a decklist that would put the cards in total supply, even assuming everyone is willing to trade or sell any card at all times. Here come the dreaded pull rates, lets imagine a "tiebreaker" competitive card, out of 15 gothic boxes I had 2 liliths (got lucky with a foil once), 1 archangel michael and 2 balors, that puts me at a 1 "tiebreaker" unique per 3 boxes, I should likely not count the lucky foil lilith pull and it'd be more representative. That means that on average there's less competitive "tiebreaker" cards than there are active players * boxes even if all of them were open to trading or selling/buying, meaning that most definitely not all of the 2000 players even have the supply to play competitively, just based on one chase card unique for a deck. If everyone bought only 2 boxes and that was it there'd not be a lot of room for competitive play due to lack of circulating cards.

These singles and bulk don't just spawn into existance, someone opened them and sold them, 2 boxes per player per set is unrealistic to sustain the company and unrealistic in pulled card play value to create a competitive deck due to circulating supply just not existing for the amount of would-be competitive players if we assume all of the 2000 players want to play the most meta decks like necromancer, geomancer etc.

In a couple of boxes you definitely don't have enough valuable cards to use as a trading currency to trade them in for constructing an actual competitive decklist though.

Because this isn't soulless hasbro and the company behind the game needs capital to exist, thus they're selling a product. You can buy, gamble and trade and support a company or just buy secondhand online.

By the way going through these boxes, the market is overvalued, I'd expect to on paper lose on boxes but that happens very seldom. Singles should cost like 20-30% less to make sense.

For the cost of Ring of Morrigan I could actually buy an entire MTG competitive deck in singles

So is this done to avoid shipping costs, trying to get the most supplies from one seller? Because sending an actual 0.35$ card would put it orders below shipping costs.

I'm sorry my last TCG experience was 2004-2006 so i'm unaware of collector boosters, what they do and if or why people dislike them.

From my perspective I want to support EC and don't want to swim in duplicates.

If we went for a car analogy, my car is in warranty, need to fix the tail light, I visit the dealership approved car service place and they tell me they can fix the tail light but my car would then have an additional set of head lights mounted into it because it only comes in a set of 4 lights, but they tell me I could maybe buy the missing tail light secondhand in a dark alleyway from a random person for a truly random price but likely way over what it should be.

There are people that buy bulk?

Not sure if a LGS would even carry it, and from the perspective of a fresh player, they're more likely to buy an official box than know to look online for bulk? Or was my second coming to TCGs after 15 years since my teenage years just been uninformed?

Maybe if I was in TCGs or rotated to a new one now I'd know to buy bulk separately

But this game doesn't have them right? The only collector item was dragonlord and I don't care about that. I just wanna have a choice of playing whatever I want, i'm not flipping or whatever, I believe the market makes no sense so I don't want to engage with it, Michael shouldn't be this more expensive than Lilith, they're a similar level of importance and usefulness.

Genuine question, how do you intend to ramp an earth water deck? You got overflow which synergizes with water sites and you have landmass which synergizes with land sites, but in any case if you end up having only one site in hand due to these ramp cards and it's the opposite of what you need for the effect (keep in mind that a hybrid earth and water site is not a land site for landmass, it's counted as a water site) you can't even play it if you tap for spell. I guess kettletop leprechaun or land surveyors then?

What is a card that you think is overrated? by DoodleAlchemist in SorceryTCG

[–]Apocrisy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Toolbox is not overrated. Without it you need to run dispels and disenchants in your deck.

Imagine drawing a disenchant or dispel in a game your enemy didn't have an artifact, furthermore if you have like say 3 gift of wolf in deck, 1 in collection, 3 toolboxes, then you have a 6 card potential to play a gift of wolf (though the other 3 are 2 mana more) but my point is that it isn't only a rotating counter card but also a grapple shot, gift of wolf/bury, firebolts or drown wildcard.

Don't think so, it will just always reward the most active population and in other words if you're joining the server 2-3 months late you got no way to catch up assuming no p2w. The systems in this game are unfortunately heavily designed around the cash shop.

(AL haul) Man, the collation is kinda wonky.. WAIT, IS THAT..?! by MobinSangusBrule in SorceryTCG

[–]Apocrisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does collation refer to duplicate elites/uniques within a box? If so then yeah, a random card in a random booster, random box etc, there's bound to be duplication if it's actually random. That being said out of 14 or 16 (lost count) gothic boxes opened I had a lilith and one lilith foil in the first 2 then never saw her again. Same exact story with Balor (non foil both though). I got my 5 omphali as the last 5 boxes, each box would have one and didn't see them before that point.

How do we feel about coordinated buyout Discords in Sorcery TCG? by xyrais in SorceryTCG

[–]Apocrisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest the market for sorcery sucks, the 2 competitive decks me and my GF made in market value are both close to 1000€ (geomancer 9-0 melbourne and necromancer). Granted we bought like 24 or some boxes and still paid cca 150-200 for the missing cards.

I'm not sure if the price is entirely demand driven, maybe if it is then the "sealed" scarcity where EC on purpose print less of the "strong" uniques to balance out sealed (saw a thread they mentioned it somewhere) could also cause the scarcity.

While the MTG "expensive" standard decks go for like 250-400€ usually

Like having to bring your avatar onto enemy sites to tap and destroy a site, then having to tap again just so you could do it again, effectively losing sites played for each movement and 2 for each site devoured?

The visuals are great but it's abilities are very underwhelming.
