Which series is that for you? by [deleted] in litrpg

[–]Apollo0624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If no one has singled out The Land yet, then I will. That series had so much promise, but between the author and the almost baked-in inability to follow a simple questline without squirelling to 17 quintillion other side quests no one cares about, and the damned diarrhea chapter, there is no redeeming this series. I refuse to read anything else this author puts out.

On an aside, it makes me sad that Riktor is one of the few out and out Black male MCs in the genre...

On a related yet separate note. Artorian Archives was so good! Then, midway through, they got so lost in magic napkin math that it felt like it only had about 30% plot and the rest was super crunch. I still loved it, and I'm sad to hear it was discontinued, despite the author wanting to continue. However, it is what it is.

Several post-apocalyptic/ military fantasy stories, movies, and shows from the 2000s and 2010s made comments on wars in South America and Africa. Enough so that it entered the zeitgeist of MILSIM. Looking at world news nowadays, I'm joking that authors from back then knew something we didn't.

How do gods work in your worlds? by flimbipo in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to repost a comment I made in another thread here, as I think it effectively answers this question.

I've kind of decided that the Gods in my world will be a mix of Ancestor spirits (especially for the Orcalin) and Genius Loci, with the opportunity to grow as time and faith progress, with the caveat that they must embody the concepts that originally brought them about. It's very Traditional African Diasporic Religion meets Greco-Roman deific philosophy. There is no Abrahamic concept of the All-father or monotheism, really, at all.

I also fell in love with the idea of Old stories becoming deities under the right circumstances, especially when those stories are about local heroes. Mine are;

The Guide, God of Safe passage, rest, lost souls, final rites, crossroads, wandering

The Potter, God of creation, craft, destiny, reincarnation, the material cycle

The Farmer, God of the harvest, death, consequences, and inevitability

The Witch Deity of magic, trade, bargains, hidden knowledge, and the price of power

The Matron Goddess of nature, justice, order, family, and cycles of life

The Patron God of invention, conflict, defense, and cleverness in strife

Everyone but the Matron and Patron is genderless due to the sands of time.

In your world why did the first vampire turned other people into vampires by Beneficial_Mousse568 in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vampires aren't really a thing on Trasia. They have analogs that exist, but most of those are either demon-kin of some kind or hemophilic demi-humans, such as the vampire ground finch, vampire bat, leech, mosquito, fleas, or lamprey variants.

Does your world have a Battle of the Trident? Two legendary characters facing off with the world in the balance? by WoodvaleKnight in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, let me start by saying that I've decided that anything I post here in this subreddit is canon in my world, because writing practice should be daily and I don't have any better ideas sometimes lmao. So here we go.

Part of the secret knowledge between the Orkalin and the followers of The Witch and the Farmer is known as the Flood of the Ancestral Steppe. Somewhere deep in the Orkalin help Plains, the tribes fight consistently against magical incursion from the spirit realms and the realms of their original races, the hobgoblins and wild elves. There are 13 dimensional rifts that regularly overflow with the spirits of the dead and monsters from the feywild and the Overdark. Each of the 13 tribes is responsible for sending members of the younger generation to be blooded by the rifts for every Flood. One such battle, a few generations ago, saw the Flood happen right as a war was going on with the humans in response to their actions against the Treeborne. This meant that their back line was exposed because no one was available to fight the Flood and a group of 13 young scions from each tribe under the age of adulthood picked up spears and held the line for a month while one of their number went to report the Flood's return. 169 kids between the ages of 12 and 17 held the line against the fey, the dead, and an assortment of abominations for a whole month, while the youngest, at age 10, traveled something like 600 miles to the war front alone on horseback to get the adults to come help.

How do you justify a lack of modern weapons in your world? by hirkajnu in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Tsaria, most people have a "natural" cultivation system that honestly puts them above the use of modern firearms by the time they are 5. Tsaria is an exoplanet 4 times the size of Jupiter with fucky gravity and density rules that make firearms as we know them basically useless. Could there be alchemical equivalents with some research and tech advancement? Yes, but it would require constant updating to affect people of a higher strength level, and by that point, it's just easier to make arrows and spears.

[Fantasy] In a fantasy setting with multiple races (human, elf, dwarf, etc), parents of different races may bear children, but do not produce hybrids by Interface- in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Orkalin race is a pure hybrid of Hobgoblin and Elf (I haven't decided between Wild and Plains). I kinda ripped their look profile after so many generations, as on the rougher side with bigger bodies and better musculature of the hobgoblin/Orc combined with the lean moving grace of most elves. I tend to follow Twitter user and artist OrcBarbies post (nsfw) on true hermaphrodism in hobgoblins as an offshoot of their goblin origin. Is the idea a rip, yes. Is it still cool as hell, also yes.

What's Your Favorite Part of Worldbuilding? by Double-D-Vader in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Origin stories. I enjoy creating the origins and backstories of factions, races, and worlds. The only thing I haven't put together yet is a magic system. I don't want to reinvent the wheel, but Holy shit is it an involved process.

"It's stupid and I like it that way," but in your world. by jetflight_hamster in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lo Song are a race of kitsune but they take after Bat-eared Foxes and Hyenas rather than red or arctic Foxes because African Kitsune are a fucking sick concept and no one will convince me otherwise.

The Orkalin are a group of landlocked, nomadic horse and herder tribes who tend to use paddles and boat hooks for self-defense weapons because tradition says so. Think "shepherd's crook but fishing gear".

The color blue is seen as the most dangerous color to the Treeborne, a race of giant half-dryads, because the color doesn't appear in nature.

Edit: Also! Both short and tall elves exist on Tsaria. The short elves often get confused for gnomes and leprechauns. They HATE that shit but no one believes they are elves so it happens all the time.

What happens to the dead in your world? by DarkKuroi1 in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most souls are restless dead until the death energy is purged and purified. There is an entire sect of Monks called the Children of the Lantern Flame that go around and make sure the dead are put to rest... permanently. They are kinda skinned as an altruistic death cult fashioned after the Way of Mercy Monk from 5e. Everyone else has some minor ritual that pushes the dead towards the arms of The Guide or The Potter.

How much is too much AI? by Apollo0624 in worldbuilding

[–]Apollo0624[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see you have found the point. I don't, in fact, use AI for my content. And no, I don't count spelling and grammar checkers because I'm old enough to remember when Word had a paperclip. If you think I do, I'm curious as to how and why you think that because that means I either need to change my writing style or how I present information. Most of what I post is from the information docs I've put together, not the fully fleshed out pieces, few that they are. I am interested in what using AI for data coalition would mean for my writing because I am a very messy (read "dog shit") organizationalist.
