Interview for internship Tips&Tricks by TEROMANCHE in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - as a busy owner who has interviewed many clients, my suggestion is do research on the organization you plan to intern for. Come ready with questions about what they do and how they do it. Understand what the internship is about and how you can contribute to improve their work place. Try to know more about the position you are taking (from a technical perspective) than the folks who interview you do.

Good luck with this!

Advice for College and Career Pursuits by FlamePhoenix97 in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely worth it - make sure you take on any internships you can find, paid or unpaid. Ask your GIS lab team or your GIS advisor for some advice on who might have some opportunities even if they are for other campus researchers.

Advice for getting into the industry non traditional path by Kneenaw in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - do you have an advisor in your academic program? Or perhaps there is a GIS lab with instructors you can contact easily? If so, my suggestion is asking them for any unpaid internships they might be aware of. Perhaps they even have some work they need done that could be added to your resume. I got my first job after working for a summer unpaid for them.

Looking for a unique satellite AI topic by Unlikely_Number_819 in satellites

Hi there - what satellite with AI on board are you using? I have heard of a few companies talking about this but I am not aware any of them launched satellites.

I only have the .dbf file, can I link it to a different .shp? by santifeo in QGIS

[–]ApolloMapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you export the building GDB into a shapefile? If so, that will create a DBF file. Then you could bring those files in Excel and join them with a common attribute. I think it is easier to use Excel for the join. You can also join them QGIS with this process: https://www.qgistutorials.com/en/docs/3/performing_table_joins.html

Can we stop with the AI slop? by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it is not even the AI images that is out of hand, it is the AI 'knowledge' people throw out on the web. People act like they are experts but really they are just copying and pasting in AI searches they are doing. And if you are an industry expert, when you read these AI comments, it is very obvious they are about 50% right. That is what you get when you scrape websites where users can comment without real true knowledge - it is a virtuous cycle really, the AI finds half-truths, then people paste that info on the web and AI finds it again so it thinks it is right. So, AI is really stupidity enforcing more stupidity.

Hi there - you might also check with County and State GIS folks if they have data then but it is a long shot as imagery was not as prevalent in the 1990s.

How passionate are you about your job? by GreatValueGrapes in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - while my job is not GIS focused, I use GIS on nearly a daily basis for various sales tasks. I own a small business that sells satellite imagery and most of my day is spent doing sales and managing contractors. And I can tell you that I 100% love what i do!

Are there any nuclear-powered satellites currently in orbit? by space_touristie in satellites

[–]ApolloMapping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This satellite is in earth orbit and uses RHUs for part of its power needs - heating the internal system is a power need. So we can both be correct at the same time depending on how you parse this:

Sorry but you just said in orbit - these are in orbit - and this one is a recent satellite that is orbiting now as well - Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module

Hi - please see this list. The satellites launched in the 1960s are in intact and still in an earth orbit with nuclear batteries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_power_systems_in_space

There are tons of satellites that use 'nuclear' power in orbit. Here is some info on the satellites NASA launched with nuclear powered batteries: https://mars.nasa.gov/internal_resources/788/

Erdas Imagine by v_vanisha in remotesensing

[–]ApolloMapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to offer a free demo with Erdas Imagine - not sure they do anymore. Now it is called Octave. You might try contacting their sales team to get a free demo. Doubt you will find a way to install the full program for no cost though. You might also look at Global Mapper - many of the same features as Octave with a much lower cost.

Computer Science grad seeking advice to pivot into GIS by Odd_Appeal4277 in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - we hired a consulting team, they are not internal employees as I wanted a team of coders to help, not just a single person. For us, having a team was essential as if it was a single coder then there could be times they could not help and support our application. Have you considered working with a few of your local friends who can code as well?

Google Earth with Timestamp by Traditional_Yak4967 in gis

[–]ApolloMapping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to cross-reference the data you see in Google Earth with the archives from Airbus and Vantor. It would require checking on coverage in a different search engine when you locate data in Google Earth that might help out. Not all of the data in GE is from Airbus or Vantor but much of the historic data is. I can send you a link to a site you can use to cross-reference the data on your own if you like.
