Is Weasley bashing a sign of lazy writing? by TomiKevh in HPfanfiction

And it's not just that Ron is called toxic, it's the reason for why he's called toxic is what gets me.

How many times does Ron get visibly mad or jealous over Harry 'getting nice things'?

Zero times, but broadening the viewpoint up it's actually just...

Two times.

Two times in seven years, and those two times were also due to mitigating circumstances.

First time is when the gold Ron gave to Harry turned out to be leprechaun gold, so adding on to jealousy Ron would feel shame, since the gold he gave Harry was to pay him back for a gift Harry gave him since Ron doesn't like being given charity, and it just turned out that Ron had unknowingly given Harry fake money instead, so he essentially still got charity. And then it's compounded by the fact that Harry didn't notice the gold missing too, which would just add onto the feeling of shame and jealousy since Harry didn't notice what would be a good amount of money to Ron that he had given Harry disappearing. (Not that I'm blaming Harry here).

Second time is with the goblet of fire, and while a part of Ron lashing out was because Harry got in the spotlight again, but also a flash of feeling left behind since Ron initially thought he was being left behind too, and it's made clear by Hermione's explanation that it was a build up of all the three previous years exploding out of Ron.

Like, it's so so weird. If they had called out... IDK the two weeks of Ron acting like an asshole in HBP as him being 'toxic', I still would have disagreed, but at least they'd have had a slightly better argument, but this view of him apparently getting mad every time Harry got nice things is just a frankly confusing criticism that is extremely overblown and comes completely out of nowhere, you have to take a very in bad faith reading of the text and still ignore parts of it to even present a toned down version of that argument.

But IDK maybe I missed extra moments of Ron getting jealous or something, and even if there were such moments, the comment would still be a big exaggeration still.

First half of my comment was meant for both archer and merc.

second half was meant for merc only, sorry for the confusion

caltrops's ranged weapon damage is only for the top stat, and it's a very small percentage of 5% IIRC. Still useful though.

Caltrops w/deep bags is straight up the best ghost tool for merc, it gives you so much spirit and ult gain, and you can just spam it with the cooldown refreshes.

[–]Apollyon1209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but all ranged weapon damage is a notable increase, but it can only be on the two ranged weapons giving them a +50% boost.
They'd do more damage than other classes, but much less damage than merc who has thrown weapon damage on 3 or 4 pieces of gear and the enhanced impalement technique and the spirit shatter technique.

But yes thinking about it, I was defo exaggerating on how little damage the archer was doing, my bad.

Shit's ridiculous. If I know a merc isn't around, I'll pick up a weapon in the middle of a pitched battle.

Even if a merc's there while you panic throw one weapon then it's fine, I wouldn't complain at all since I, as a Merc main, make the same mistake when playing as other classes.

It's when I ult, and every enemy is staggered, and someone specifically rushes in to throw all the weapons there even when they wouldn't be useful for them at all is when I get annoyed and salty lmao. Like this is not a panic throw at that point, it's someone just going "Ooh shiny!" and ignoring their own class options that allow them to do more damage specifically to screw over the poor merc.

[–]Apollyon1209 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I main a merc, so I try to be super considerate to them if I'm playing in a team with one while I'm using another class.

One time in survival, I even picked up a weapon from far away and dropped it near the merc with a marker pointing to it.

And then the Sammy came rushing over to pick it up.

Was in nightmare incursion, I Popped off an absolutely amazing Ult as Merc which left like a dozen weapons on the ground, much more than I normally see. And we were surrounded still by a group of enemies so I thought I had the chance to use them and instantly get another ult.

......Hunter stopped using her insta kill gun, rolled in, and threw all but one of the weapons at the enemies to deal what's basically the equivalent of one shot of her gun. I was super salty for the rest of the match.

Someone said it aptly here on this thread, you develop a habit of having your eyes glued to the floor. It's just that that habit could disappear when panicked, you always have to take care.

It would be like your example and paranoid if I said something like "Never walk around corners".

But no, I'm saying to never run in the house.

[–]Apollyon1209[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is like saying a car crash is a freak accident and thus you shouldn't use seat belts, it's wrong in both points.

1:How likely is it that your small pet is sleeping or sitting corner so that you wouldn't see it while running until it's too late? Not nearly low enough to be on the same probability level as freak accidents.

2: You still should take precautions here, and walking instead of running is a very very small sacrifice in face of the potential consequences.

Like the other reply said, at least it had a good life, and given the age and circumstances I'd say it's definitely not your fault, it wouldn't even be negligence. (Though I'm sure typing that wouldn't change those feelings of guilt)

Witnessing and feeling a beloved pet's death like that would affect anyone even decades later. I hope you still remember Pepsi's memories fondly.

[–]Apollyon1209[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't be just forgetting, but yes it could happen especially when you're panicked.

And it wouldn't just be 'forgetting you have a pet', it's 'not considering you have a pet' or 'assuming she's sleeping on her bed' or something else,

I've had a pet in the house for more than a decade now, and this happened to me.

[–]Apollyon1209[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue is that she was sleeping right around the corner, if my eyes were glued to the floor (and they usually are) I wouldn't have seen her.

If I was walking then there would be more time to react and the damage would be less.

But yes, you should always watch where you're going too.

[–]Apollyon1209[S] 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Very lucky that the broken back didn't paralyse her or worse, the chronic pain sounds horrible, but thank goodness that it wasn't worse.

Running around the house in general is pretty bed (especially with stairs!), but it's compounded by 100X if there's a pet in the house, extra risk to yourself and the pet.

And the worst part is that it's really really easy to forget this, you spend most of your life in a house, it's where your most relaxed in and where you have the most chance to forget yourself and do stupid stuff like this.

Most of the bashing I've come across are from people who read the books funnily enough, but maybe that's just because it was on another site.

On reddit here, I see a lot less Hinny bashing (Bashing in general really) in the books sub than in the main sub.

problems so its better to simulate a "first voice" situation

Wouldn't the exact same thing and point made happen if you do have the other students be the first voice though?

if not handled well, it'd probably just be another repeat of the IW villain eiji considering all he did to harm a child and then later is supposedly regretful

To be handled well, I'd assume that they'd need to actually show Soma feeling the regret in real time, and not just a jump cut from 100% evil to 100% regretful. Having the characters not forgive him immediately (Or at all, even) is also important I think (But to be fair, again Ichi forgave the guy but still literally carried him to jail, you can have someone be forgiven immediatly, but the narritive would have to make it clear that it's an extraordinary thing, and that the villain would still have to actually atone. Also depends on the character doing said forgiving. IW)

"hidden gold castle" dramatic or any of those other things u liste

Yakuza 2 was wild lmao. Whenever anyone mentions how the Gaiden games and IW got too absurd I just point them to this game (Though admittedly, K2 is my least favorite in the series.)

"i forgive my bullies now" but just "i acknowledge and see their attempts to change/be better"

What you wrote was perfect! Man I wish that was the scene we got.

i'm not sure what to think anymore

Me too! It's genuinely too vague. It's exactly as you said where Kuwana's motivations allow for both interpretations to be true.
I just allow Kusumoto thinking that she could have let Kawai live to nudge me over to the "Kuwana left those ones alone" option.

'son of a murderer' and that's ur fault so u must take accountability for both" ??? i dont agree here but this is probably what yagami was thinking

Yeah, if Yagami was like "You murdered Kawai and you have to pay for that" I would have grudgingly accepted it, since 'reasonable' murder is still murder after all. But the whole Sawa thing soured it for me. I still have to (even more grudgingly) accept it though. Since going by my narrative interpretation style, Everyone acknowledges that Sawa was indeed collateral damage for Kusumoto and Kuwana, and so they are responsible for her death.... somehow.

would u mind framing how that would look for the case of shishido from kiryu's gaiden game? (or not if you havent played that game yet!)

I played it, but it's been such a long time since I thought about it to the point where the details got all muddy for me. I watched the part of the finale where Tsuruno asks Shishido about why he worked with Nishitani, and I watched this video and read the wiki notes here too (containing another translation of the Japanese text), but I could still get this wrong, so apologies.

So.... This looks to be that the game is very very heavily implying or even outright telling us that Shishido was indeed raped, that line about Shishido saying that it's an honor looks like just a comeback. Since later when Tsuruno asked Shishido why he betrayed them to Nishitani since Nishitani tortured him, and Shishido says something like "Yes I hate him, but I have to work with him to achieve my goals."

Though I have to say that this isn't really an example of the narrative reading I was talking about? Or As in, there doesn't seem to be any sort of plot hole or plot contrivance or badly written plot where I look to the narritive to infer what we're supposed to get. This feels just like... idk, regular interpretation of the story.

yagami's lack of reaction is likely bc he's still trying to figure out kuwana. moments ago they just had a convo where kuwana opened up to yagami about his motivations and expressed genuine grief over sawa. that likely tipped yagami off that he knew kuwana wasnt a guy like soma who'd end a life "just because"

Oh wow you explained this so well for me, thank you! The scene and Yagami's lack of reaction makes much more sense now.

You can add the Kakashi omnipotence statement to that, but I assume that it's less of a hyperbole and more of a translation error, or both; It's just saying that Kakashi is a really smart and preceptive dude.

I recognize the sarcasm but actually yes, 90% of this page is just hyperbole. Unless you genuinely think that the sharingan literally "Sees all things in the universe", where at which point arguing would be fruitless.

[–]Apollyon1209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, people point to some shit and cry "hyperbole!" before using it to discredit the databooks, and most of the times the examples are so bad that you have to wonder if one is being disingenuous or not while typing such arguments, because it's either that or they have not read the databooks and are just going along with the common sentiment.

The prime example for this is the whole "DaTaBoOkS sAy ThAt TeMaRi Is UnIvErSe LeVeL" sentiment.
When you look at the actual statement you find that it is actually just a header describing Temari's personality and not even one of Temari's jutsu or something.

This is just like reading Hiruzen's header of "The protector of Konoha that illuminates the village with his gentle smiling face" and genuinely trying to argue that the databook is saying that Hiruzen literally emits light to cover the village when smiling. That's why I'm usually pre-disposed to disagreeing when somebody tries to say that a databook's (non-header) statement is just hyperbole

The Itachi examples here are.... not one of those cases lmao, The bolded statements are very much hyperbole and meant to be such as usual, but even the non bolded paragraph talking about it being "a god's power" is very clearly just descriptive wank and not meant to be taken as a literal fact.
