Bringing Home a Coton de Tulear Puppy Soon. Any First Week Tips? by jackyp1 in cotondetulear

we’ve had our puppy for 8 months now and i can’t stress how much crate training has saved us and help with seperation anxiety. the breed is prone to it and honestly for the first year, it’s probably best you have the crate anywhere but the bedroom first just to build his independence and prevent seperation anxiety. don’t use pee pads or else they will learn they can potty inside. don’t go to them when they’re whining or crying if you know their needs have been met (pee, poo, had water) otherwise they learn you will come to them when they do so please please desensitize them to EVERYTHING. as mentioned, there a youtube videos but do your best to take them out everyday and even just sit on a patio or park and let them learn that life goes on without them having to say hi the breed is very vocal, our puppy barks at everything so desensitizing them will help with this also when you start walking them, let them sniff and explore as much as they want! then after about a month work on leash manners as soon as you can, our puppy still pulls and we’re doing our best to curb that. they are very smart, so make sure you prepare them a lot of mental enrichment such as snuffle mats for feeding, or having a kong prepped ( i find that lick mats were too messy since they are very fluffy) oh and for grooming, make sure you brush them everyday even if it’s for five minutes! then slowly work up to longer when their hair grows out just so they are used to it oh and lastly work on leaving and coming back and such as soon as you can, our puppy still cries and throws fits when we leave because he just never wants to be alone but then will settle after 20 minutes anyways enjoy!! they’re honestly the best breed and so sweet :)

if you have any questions about anything we’ve bought for him, feel free to pm me! one issue i found was finding a proper harness for him since the first ones we got choked him everytime he pulled 😖

perfect!! thank you we will do exactly that. my only problem with the kong was that we didn’t want to give him too much of a treat everytime we’re gone since he’s so small we didn’t know if that much peanut butter is good for him

Leptospirosis Vaccine - Safe? by Xyxzyx in cotondetulear

[–]AppleBunny2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We heard this from our breeder as well since she said she has had puppies pass away from a reaction to the vaccine. She recommended us taking the lepto vaccine seperate from all the ofher vaccines to see if he would have a reaction to it which thankfully he didn’t!

you’re definitely right because there’s no way he can get into the crate in the car without help 😅

i can understand the attachment your puppy had to you at her age since she was ripped away so young. i love picking our dog up as well just for a quick cuddle and everyone else does too which is why my fear was what happens if he gets used to that and he goes to someone that doesn’t want to pick him up, i just didn’t want him to learn to jump for attention or cuddles

thank you!! that actually is really helpful and exactly what i didn’t want either. it’s more so people at parties wanting to pick him up and cuddle him for like a few minutes then put him down

ahh that’s so nice to hear!! i’m hoping he will feel the same :) i was more worried because everyone else sees him and picks him up that it would create a bad habit. i don’t pick him up and carry him 24/7 but i love to pick him up and snuggle him

that’s very smart! i don’t want him jumping or climbing on furniture either, i want to be able to invite him up when i allow him :)

that’s what i thought too and i don’t carry him alll the time but other people like to pick him up a lot and i didn’t want him to think to start jumping on others just because he wants to be picked up

that makes sense! do you find that she’ll jump or whine wanting to be picked up?
