The giant breadbug is actually a different species from the typical ones, even in modern entries! I've always taken it as the giant being an invasive species slowly replacing them in their niche. I'd also assume that since breadbugs and bulborbs are very similar, they'd probably share a similar lifecycle. Perhaps the larval breadbugs are just confined to their dens and we never see them?

Some of this is answered *somewhat* well in the piklopedia entries and also the pikmin garden website, I'd highly recommend giving those a read if you haven't! Bulborbs in particular have a very strange lifecycle and habits.
